Welcome Back CCDS Families!

Welcome CCDS families!

With school just around the corner, I want to welcome everyone back and let you know how excited we are to greet students and begin our learning journey together for the 2017-2018 school year!

Last year as a staff, we developed the   "why" of CCDS and are happy to continue this year focused on: being good to each other and doing work that matters. Project Based Learning supports both of these pieces as students develop collaborative skills, reflect on their learning, and contribute and connect to the community in meaningful ways. Thank you for choosing to send your student(s) to a school where this is the priority. PBL creates an added layer of excitement and joy for learning, while also asking us to venture into unknown territory and asking kids to learn in ways that are likely quite different from the ways we learned in school. In this changing world, we also have to embrace change and support the change makers of tomorrow.

In thinking about supporting our students as problem solvers, questioners, deep thinkers, and honoring their voices in their learning, we have chosen the yearlong theme of Wonder . Having a four year old at home, I am deeply entrenched in an environment of constant questions; I see how that wondering helps him learn, connect ideas, and expand his thinking. I hope all of the students and adults in our community keep the sense of wonder, curiosity, and questioning that supports our journey as lifelong learners. Wouldn't it be fun if we all took on this theme and looked for ways to expand our curiosities, asked more questions, and looked at the ordinary with a sense of wonder?

Many of you have inquired about school supplies for the upcoming year. Instead of individual supply lists, we have grade-level and department wishlists. Shared materials and common supplies are crucial for creating a classroom space built for collaboration. If you're able to donate toward the needs of the grade level, supplies will be distributed to all students from there. Students will have access to supplies at school regardless of whether or not their families have made a donation. Click here for the grade-level wish list.

I also wanted to be sure to put Back-to-School Night on your radar at this time as well. Back-to-School Night is August 28 beginning at 5:30 p.m. This is a great way to learn more about the expectations and experiences your students will have for the upcoming year. Now is also a great time to take a moment with the master calendar  and mark off significant dates for this year. Our minimum days are spread throughout the year, as are several staff development non-student days. It can be helpful to get those on the calendar early.

Thank you for being a part of what makes this school a beautiful place for teaching and learning! I look forward to working with you all to make 2017-2018 one of our most wonder ful years yet!

Warmly,
Wendy

General Homework Philosophy

At CCDS, students are engaged with meaningful and purposeful work while they are at school. Projects are intended to be completed at school where students are able to receive critique, feedback, and collaborate with classmates. Students in all grades are completing in-depth projects that have them stretch their understanding of real-world problems, collaborate in groups, and carry out challenging tasks in order to exhibit beautiful work to an authentic audience. Because of the depth of this inquiry, students will often discover interests they would like to learn more about outside of school. At home, we encourage these extension inquiries from class as a great way to encourage your students' learning.

Nightly reading is a requirement at each grade level and studies show that this is one of the greatest time-benefits for overall educational growth. Specific grade levels will share nightly reading requirements. We value and prioritize the time, effort, and energy students put into their learning here at school and want to give them the space to play, help around the house, pursue outside interests, and read nightly that a shift away from traditional homework may allow.

We look forward to hearing your feedback as the year progresses as to how your family is experiencing this shift. The middle school teachers will have slightly different at-home requirements, but will also be mindful of the commitment students make to their learning while they are here each day. Look for more specific 6th-8th information at Back to School Night.

We are offering two rounds for 1st-5th grade.  You may choose to attend 1st or 2nd round.
The Schedule:

5:30-6 p.m.      Round 1  1st-5th Grade
6:10-6:40 p.m.  Round 2  1st-5th Grade

6:50-7:30 p.m.    Kindergarten (classroom)
                                     6th Grade (MS Common Area)
                    7th-8th Grade (Gym)

For your convenience, Blue Oak Mobile Live Scan Service will be on campus. They will be here from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Room 22 which is next door to Miss Nye's kindergarten room. Live Scans are $67 with $5 donation back to CCDS. This is great opportunity to complete this requirement needed to drive on field trips. The live scan only needs to be done once while your student is at CCDS.

Back-to-School Night is a parent only event. Please line-up your babysitter! Please be considerate of our neighbors when parking and be prepared to walk a couple blocks during all-school events.

Looking forward to seeing you!
