Upper School Enjoys Annual Event
|
Upper School students had an event-filled retreat on September 9 at the Southern Cross Ranch. The ranch gave students an opportunity to paddle boat, rock climb, swim, and play volleyball. The retreat began with an exciting boy's volleyball tournament between Spirit Houses and ended with a powder puff football game between the Upper School girls. Congratulations to the Blue House which took the championship for both the volleyball and football games.

Freshman Competes in World Championships
|
At the Triathlon World Championships, held from September 11-18 in Cozumel, Mexico, freshman
Hamed El-Feky raced for the Egyptian team. The twelve team members competed in various professional and age group categories, while also raising funds for the Egypt Cancer Network.
El-Feky has participated in triathlons for the last five years with the Playtri team in Dallas. He added extra practices, including swimming before school, in order to prepare for the World Championships. On September 11, El-Feky competed in the Sprint race, swimming 400 meters, biking 13 miles and running a 5K. Other team members will compete throughout the week.
"It was great to see so many people from around the world racing together," El-Feky said. "I had a lot of fun and the Egyptian team raced for a great cause which made this experience so memorable."
The Egypt Cancer Network is an organization that supports the Children Cancer Hospital 57357 in Egypt.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program Recognizes Volunteer Spirit
|
Students in grades 5 - 12 who have made a difference by volunteering in their community over the past year could win $1,000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C. next May by applying for a Prudential Spirit of Community Award! Even more importantly, they could win recognition that might inspire other people to follow their example.
To apply:
- Visit http://spirit.prudential.com, click on the "Apply Now" link, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Once you have completed your online application, go to the "Certification" page to either e-mail certification instructions to Ms. Ekstrom, or to print them out and hand deliver them to her. This must be done by November 8, 2016.
The Awards Committee will then select a Local Honoree for both Middle School and Upper School and nominate them for state-level judging. For more information, please see

Work on the u
tilities and ground preparation for the bottom floor continued throughout the week. Once this work is completed and the steel is installed, the concrete floor will be poured.
Work is underway on the pillars and fencing in front of the new faculty parking lot.

Lakehill Welcomes Jennifer Herta
|

Jennifer Herta
joins the Lakehill faculty this year, teaching
Computer Science I, Computer Science II, Computer Maintenance, Web Design, and Advanced Computer Graphics. She also serves as the Computer Science/Technology Department Chair. Herta is a Sophomore Class Sponsor and is also sponsoring the Computer Club, Enigma Music Club, and the International Student Association.
As a child growing up in a military family, Herta attended eight different schools from kindergarten through high school. She has lived in eleven cities in six U.S. states as well as two cities in Germany. She finished high school at Mansfield Summit High School in Mansfield, Texas and attended college at the University of North Texas (UNT), earning a B.A. in Radio, Television, and Film.
Now in her sixth year of teaching, Herta previously taught Computer Science and Information Technology classes at the Bill R. Johnson Career and Technology Center in Crowley, Texas.
Herta and her husband Andrew met at UNT, and they have been married for three years. They love to travel whenever they have the opportunity, usually somewhere with mountains. At home, Herta spends most of her free time on the Internet, watching television, or reading. "Sports on two or four wheels are popular in our home," Herta says. "We like to cheer on our favorite drivers and teams in Formula One (Ferrari because Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen are so much fun), IndyCar
(Andretti/Herta Autosport),
and Red Bull Global Rallycross (Bryan Herta Rallycross).
Herta seemed destined to teach from an early age. "When I was a kid and it was time to 'play pretend,' I always wanted to play school, and I always wanted to be the teacher. As I got older, I enjoyed school and learning new things--and I had a few really inspiring teachers and professors. Since I enjoyed it so much, I guess I decided to never leave. Now I get to wake up and go to a job every day that I love. How many people get that privilege?"
Herta believes that Digital Literacy and Digital Citizenship are important for every student to thrive in today's world. "I am passionate about sharing the 'magic' of Computer Science with my students, and it is especially rewarding to capture the interest of students who didn't think it would be for them."
Herta says she has been inspired by the students at Lakehill. "
They express their desire not only to get good grades but to learn and understand as much as possible, for their own fulfillment."
Herta says the best part of her job is "
The students, of course! They never cease to amaze me with their wit, caring, and creativity. People always want to proclaim that the sky is falling with the next generation, but if the students of Lakehill are any indication, I think we are going to be quite alright."

In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Brandon Bartholow
Brandon Bartholow has attended Lakehill for eight
years. During his time in Middle School, he loved to watch the Varsity Football team play, and has played Varsity all four years in Upper School. During his freshmen year, Brandon was part of a "legendary" Bowling Club. He has also participated in Varsity Track.
Out of all the classes that Brandon has taken, his favorites are AP Physics and Algebra II. He has applied to three colleges: Butler University, Texas A&M,and UC Boulder. He plans to major in Computer Science.
Brandon's advice is, "Take pride in your work and complete your assignments on time."

Get Ready for the Warriors

Varsity and JV Volleyball
The Lakehill JV volleyball team has had great week in district play. JV beat Lutheran in three sets
on Monday (25-13; 23-25; 15-7). The team struggled in the second set, but won the third set with strong serving.
On Tuesday the team traveled to Irving to take on The Highlands School. The girls beat The Highlands in two sets (25-18; 25-5).
Claire Howard and
Stella Palmer led the team in aces.
"I was really proud of how we played
Tuesday," said JV Head Coach Katie Ford. "The team is working really well together, serving aggressively, and passing very consistently. It's been fun watching them run their offense and seeing them work on different hits at the net."
The Varsity girls also beat Lutheran
on Monday in straight sets (25-8; 25-20; 25-11).
Claire Crow led the serving effort with seven aces while also having 21 assists and 13 digs. It was a solid defensive effort with five of the Lady Warriors earning double digits in digs on the night.
On Tuesday, the girls lost a tough match against The Highlands (25-18; 23-25; 18-25; 23-25). The team is now 3-1 in district play.
Abi Price led in kills with 18 on the night.
"I was pleased with how we played against Lutheran and knew it would be tough going into the Highlands game," said Varsity Head Coach Jhoana Cayme-Mosley. "We play in a very tough district and in the long run I think playing teams of that caliber will help prepare us for playoffs. Now we have to reset and refocus for Thursday's games."
The teams are at home against Yavneh at
6:00 and 7:00 p.m,
tonight. The team travels to Dallas Covenant on September 20 before returning home to play Rockwall Heritage on September 22.
Middle School Volleyball
On September 13, the 8th grade lost to Canterbury (25-12; 25-18) while the 7th grade won (25-13, 25-10). The seventh grade team was led by
Graysen Walker,
Madison Deason and
Kourtni Jones.
The Lakehill Warriors hosted Lewisville Founders Academy at the Warrior Athletic Complex (WAC)
on Friday night. It was a close contest throughout. The visiting Eagles took advantage of two Warrior turnovers to maintain a 37-28 lead
in the first half. Lakehill cut the lead to 43-40 late in the third quarter, but Founders responded with a touchdown drive to make it 49-40. Both defenses tightened in the scoreless final quarter, resulting in a 49-40 Eagle victory.
Senior
Brandon Bartholow set a school record (six-man) with 348 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Defensively, junior
Warren Lester, sophomore
Avery Meiteen, and freshman
Jalen Webster all had double-digit tackles.

Middle School Football
The Lakehill Warriors Middle School Football team posted its first victory of the season on Friday September 9, defeating the Inspired Vision Eagles, 40-30, at the WAC.
The highlight of the first half was
Matthew McCall
's 75-yard interception return for a touchdown.The Warriors were led by
Ryan Henry who scored four touchdowns.
Andrew Ward played a solid game on defense and scored a touchdown.
Mitchell Crow was strong on defense and kicked two extra points for the Warriors.
The team travels to Irving Universal
on Thursday
for their first road game at
5:00 p.m
.
