From Mrs. Rowley  nativity_scene.jpg

What a busy week we are having!  On Monday we began our day with an Advent service to start our week.  We also enjoyed a fun assembly  presented by "Under the Sea."  The students had a fun time learning about marine creatures and how they live.  Thanks to Mrs. Sloma-Williams and the PTO for arranging this.  See photos belowOn Tuesday we had our Choral Christmas Concert.  Today we got to visit the church to pray the Rosary before the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The school was honored to have our own special time with the image before it was open to the public. Tomorrow we will enjoy two performances by our school band (please join us for either one!) at 2pm and 7pm.  What talented students we have in our school!

Once again, thank you to all of our generous parents who donated items to the Three Kings Shop, the toy drive (the police picked up four full boxes!), and our Babies in Bethlehem collection.

As next week is a short week, we will not have an edition of The Buzz, so let me take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry and Peaceful Christmas.  In the busy-ness of the season may we take some time to slow down, and allow our souls to catch up with our busy bodies!

Lord, in this holy season of prayer and song and laughter, we praise You for the great wonders You have sent us: for shining star and angel's song, for infant's cry in lowly manger. We praise you for the Word made flesh in a little Child. We behold His glory, and are bathed in its radiance. Amen.

School News

On Monday, students from Preschool through to 8 th grade participated in an Under the Sea presentation at the Parish Center.   The three assemblies, which were each geared to K-3, 4-8, and preschool, were sponsored by the PTO and presented by the "Touch the Sea" group.   The two marine scientists on site introduced children to several LIVE sea creatures including: spider crab, pencil sea urchin, a black-fingered mud crab, hermit crab, Florida horse conch, "Nemo" the clownfish, as well as a horseshoe crab (which we all learned is harmless, despite its intimidating looks!!).   Children learned, in age appropriate ways, the unique characteristics and habitats of each creature.

A highlight of the program was the snail race, where students cheered on 3 snails, images projected on a big screen, as they watched a live camera of them "race" to flip themselves from their "backs" to their tummies.   I think "Turbo" the snail lived up to his name!   Preschoolers, because of the smaller size of the group, were able to actually witness the Horse-shoe crab walking across the floor!   One preschool student remarked:   "It looks like a walking helmet!"   A lively and educational morning for all involved.

BE JOYFUL AS YOU CELEBRATE THIS SEASON OF JOY!

Prioritize and delegate

The holidays  are right around the corner are you having fun yet? Many are striving for the Currier and Ives Christmas of their childhood, but in reality they are dreading the holidays.
How can you beat back the dread and have the family holiday of your dreams? Start by lowering your expectations. Be more realistic about what you can do. This usually involves changing the tradition it can be equally as good, but it has to be unique to your family. The following tips can help:

1. Reassess and Prioritize
Holiday stress sets in when you try to do it all. Stress is an emotional reaction to circumstances that you feel are out of control. To cope, take some time out, rethink what is stressing you out, and look for alternatives. Change your demands to preferences: Tell yourself, "If I have time, I'll do this and that. If not, I'll only do that."

2. Delegate!
Does the house need cleaning or decorating? Let each family member be responsible for a room. Create a "job jar." Everybody takes a turn choosing what his or her job will be. Jobs can be color-coded according to age. When you delegate, you have to make your expectations clear to your children, and you may have to lower your standards a little bit.

Club Updates
Updates from STEM Club

Last week's STEM club was held for our 5 th -8 th grade members and we got into the holiday spirit by creating 3D printed snowflakes!

We were able to design our own personalized snowflakes utilizing a computer algorithm by Makerbot Thingiverse mathgrrl. We customized our snowflakes by varying 10 parameters within the mathematical code. This allowed the students to real time visualize their snowflake design changing as they provided modifications, such as thickness of the branches and sharpness of the corners. It was a lot of fun and each snowflake was very unique. I was personally impressed with the naming conventions, such as "Awesome_Jelly_Belly_Pet_Rat_Gummi_Candy", "Flakey" and "Thingymajigger."

Once we were satisfied with the look of our snowflake, we exported our file to our 3D printer. The snowflakes were printed on our 3D printer using white PLA (PolyLactic Acid) a thermoplastic polymer (Thermoplastic means that the polymer melts when it is heated and upon cooling, hardens and can be re-melted, as opposed to a Thermoset, which remains solid. But I digress....)

You can see our snowflakes hanging on the Christmas tree in the school foyer. Who knew applied Math, Science and Technology could be so much fun!
