From In Defense of Animals: Sustainable Activism HELPLINE!

Have you seen some of your amazing volunteers get burnt out, or suffer compassion fatigue?   If so, there's a free service that might help. We offer a confidential helpline that's available to all animal activists, shelter workers, and anyone else who's helping animals.   Whenever someone calls or emails the helpline, they get a compassionate response from a fellow advocate who is trained in nonviolent communication.    I was mind-blown when I found out about this helpline. I'd previously spent $100 an hour talking to counselors who couldn't truly understand my compassion for animals. Now there's a convenient way to be listened to, and given great emotional support from an outside person who really "gets it," and without having to pay any money.   The number to call is 1-800-705-0425. The email is  helpline@idausa.org .    Here is a page with more info. Along with the Helpline, there are some other free "sustainable activism" resources including a monthly support group that's open to all activists.

Donkey Who Nearly Died In Flood Breaks Into A Grin When He's Rescued

..."The water level was already almost to his chest, and if he went any deeper, he would easily be swept away. Someone made a Facebook post including an image of the donkey and was asking for anyone's assistance, including a few strong hands and a boat...."  Full article with video Here: http://www.heroviral.com/donkey-grin/

Wildlife "Protection" Groups Betray Washington's Wolves; State Begins Killing Profanity Peak Wolf Pack

... Wolf Haven International, the Humane Society of the United States, Defenders of Wildlife, and Conservation Northwest released a shockingly brief statement about the killing of the wolf pack, which makes up 12% of the state's wolf population and will be done by gun-equipped airplanes, claiming that the decision takes into account the opinions of a "diverse group of stakeholders"... This situation occurring in Washington also appears to be ridiculously calculated, as Robert Wielgus, director of the Large Carnivore Conservation Lab at Washington State University explained to The Seattle Times,, "the livestock operator elected to put his livestock directly on top of their den site; we have pictures of cows swamping it."... It's absurd that animal advocacy groups on another "protection committee" sat idly by and were complacent about killing wolves simply because they are inconveniencing a rancher and his privately owned cattle.  This is another example of how government interests and the wants of the meat industry are time and time again taking precedence over this country's wildlife living on public lands. The best way to take action is to take the power away from these industries by choosing not to support them with your dietary choices and adopt a vegan lifestyle. We're here to help. Continued Meat Consumption Will Result in a 'Financial, Social, and Environmental Crisis', Says World's Leading Investors by Jill Ettinger

Kraft Heinz, Nestlé, Unilever, Tesco, and Walmart are just some of the major global food brands a powerful group of investors is urging to move away from animal protein and toward more sustainable plant-based protein sources instead.  Article here: http://www.organicauthority.com/continued-meat-consumption-will-result-in-a-financial-social-and-environmental-crisis-says-worlds-leading-investors/

USDA Shuts Down Slaughterhouse for Cruelty

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) temporarily suspended operations at Oregon meat processor Bartels Packing on October 27 after discovering improper use of hand-held captive bolt guns-which are intended to drive a steel bullet through a cow's skull.    During random inspections, the USDA found that employees shot cows several times with the bolt gun in places other than the skull, meaning the animals endured much suffering between shots. In its "Humane Handling and Animal Welfare" statement, Bartels Packing says, "Each year, two independent auditing firms conduct humane handling audits, and Bartels Farms is proud to report a perfect score of 100%."   The Oregon slaughterhouse was also fined $13,000 in 2013 for polluting local waterways with untreated wastewater. The USDA normally shuts down slaughterhouses based on food safety concerns, but rarely suspends operations due to animal welfare issues.  More at VegNews
Note from Northern Vegans: There is no such thing as "humane" slaughter.

Almond Milk Leads to 10,000 Fewer Dairy Cows in California

Dairy farmers in California are opting for more sustainable crops. Bloomberg writers Leslie Patton and Lydia Mulvany analyzed the shift in California from dairy to almonds, revealing that 350,000 acres of almond groves have been incorporated into the state's agricultural lands in the last decade.
In contrast, the number of dairy cows in the state has fallen by 10,000 in the period between January and July of this year. According to Patton and Mulvany, California dairy farmer s are actively replacing animal farms with almond crops. One such example comes from the acquisition of mega-dairy George Borba & Son's by Olam International-a Singapore-based company that produces almonds and pistachios. While in the 1950s his then-dairy farm did not grow almonds, Wagner says that now "there are almond trees everywhere" and that "the economics for the trees has been very good."
Though almonds have previously been categorized as a water-intensive crop, according to an exposé published in the New York Times, it takes 15.3 gallons of water to produce 16 almonds, as compared to four glasses of milk which require 143 gallons of water to produce. "Americans consume the most water by eating meat and dairy products," the exposé revealed, "primarily because a lot of water is needed to grow the crops to feed the animals." Almond milk is driving the exponentially growing dairy alternative.   More Here

GMO Dangers: Facts You Need to Know
By Jonathan R. Latham, PhD is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Bioscience Resource Project, which is the publisher of Independent Science News ( independentsciencenews.org ). He has published scientific papers in disciplines as diverse as plant ecology, virology, genetics, and RNA biology.
Includes: The Flawed Processes of GMO Risk Assessment; The Dangers of GMOs; and The True Purpose of GMOs
Excerpt: "Criticism of science and technology remains very difficult. Even though many academics benefit from tenure and a large salary, the sceptical process in much of science is largely lacking. This is why risk assessment of GMOs has been short-circuited and public concerns about them are growing. Until the damaged scientific ethos is rectified, the public is correct to doubt that GMOs should ever have been let out of any lab."  Full Article Here

Find out why potatoes and other "white foods" are really not bad for you.    Hopefully, you've been listening to me about the risks associated with mammography; today I'll cover another study that shows that over-diagnosis and over-treatment are harming lots of women and the risks are higher than you think."

Quote of the month:
"When a man's love of finery clouds his moral judgment, that is vanity. When he lets a demanding palate make his moral choices, that is gluttony. When he ascribes the divine will to his own whims, that is pride. And when he gets angry at being reminded of animal suffering that his own daily choices might help avoid, that is moral cowardice."   Matthew Scully,  Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy

Donation

Please consider making a donation to Northern Vegans
Northern Vegans is always in need of donations to continue our great work in the community.  As most of you know, not only are we a not for profit group with no paid employees, but we also often fund our group with our personal funds as board members.  Northern Vegans has existed since 2006 and a short list of our accomplishments in the community include: library donations of vegan related books and media numbering in the hundreds; dozens of movie/documentary showings; over a hundred restaurant meet ups and other socials; numerous vegan presentations; countless tabling events; immense amount of vegan literature dispersed; and the list really goes on and on.

Help us continue spreading the message and consider donating to us today.  No amount is too small and we use every bit of it to our fullest extent.  In fact it is not outlandish to say that for every $1.00 that is donated we put at least 50 cents more into that $1.00 simply because we work on a 100% volunteer basis, no salaries, and several of us continuously put our own personal money into the necessary expenses for the group.

Please send donations to:

THANK YOU!
