Call for Readers for Vis East Moot
The Fourteenth Annual Willem C. Vis East International Arbitration Moot is currently seeking readers to review Claimant and Respondent Memoranda submitted by competing teams. The Moot, which will take place in Hong Kong starting March 26, 2017, has more than 130 teams registered, which the highest number in its history. Readers will be receive 4-6 Claimants' Memoranda on or before December 20, 2016 and 4-6 Respondents' Memoranda on or before January 30, 2017. Readers will have nearly three weeks to review and rank each set of Memoranda. Volunteers may also register to rank final Claimant/Respondent Memoranda. To volunteer,

The International Law Section 2017 Visit to Cuba, February 26 - March 1, 2017

e International Law Section and its Cuba Committee are delighted to invite you to join your fellow members of the Section in this exclusive opportunity to visit Cuba with a select group of international legal practitioners. Working within the restrictions imposed on travel to Cuba, we have partnered with Cuba Cultural Travel - an organization with nearly 20 years' experience running U.S. government licensed tours to Cuba, and a group with which we have worked before.
We invite you and your guest(s) to join our private law-oriented delegation for an eye-opening journey at this most pivotal time in U.S.-Cuba relations. Our specially designed program will explore Cuba's current and past legal systems, as well as its rich and varied cultural heritage by engaging with local legal scholars, attorneys, musicians and artists, who will offer in-depth commentary on the Cuban legal system, US-Cuba relations, human rights, developments in the burgeoning Cuban private sector, as well art, music, and history.

ABA Section of International Law
is calling for
panel proposals
for its
2017 Fall Conference
, which will take place on
October 24-28, 2017
, at the JW Marriott Marquis in Miami, Florida. All panel proposals should focus on the meeting's theme: "
Doing Business in the Americas in the New Global Economy: A New Dawn in the Hemisphere?
" Please relate your program proposals to the following:
Recent elections and transitions in countries such as the United States, Argentina, Brazil and Peru promise to bring change across the hemisphere. In the United States, for example, renegotiation or exit from free trade deals such as the North American Free Trade Agreements were the subject of the campaign by both parties. Beyond trade, globalization and the rising populist calls affect all aspects of cross border practice, from litigation and arbitration, rising consumer class actions, immigration, and transactional and regulatory work. While the United States may be shifting course towards increased protectionism, countries in Latin America, such as Argentina, Brazil and Peru, are rolling back the same policies and seeking to encourage foreign investment. At the same time, regional developments continue to fundamentally alter the economic and political landscape of the region, including, for example, Operation Car Wash in Brazil, the development of UNASUR, and rejection and renegotiation of a peace deal in Colombia. What do these developments mean for lawyers practicing law in the Americas from Alaska to Argentina across all disciplines? How are lawyers from outside the Hemisphere affected? The Conference will explore these questions from the perspective of multiple practice areas and regions.

Richard Montes de Oca Visits Cuba to Attend International Trade Fair and U.S. Ambassador Reception
|
On November 1 - 3, 2016, ILS Member Richard Montes de Oca, Managing Partner and International Corporate/Compliance Attorney at MDO Partners, attended FIHAV (Feria Internacional de La Habana), the largest international multi-sector trade fair in Cuba. He met with several U.S. exhibitors, including General Electric, Caterpillar, Banco Popular and Stonegate Bank.
Mr. Montes de Oca also met with various members of the Cuba Chamber of Commerce, Bufete de Servicios Especializados (BES), a specialized Cuba law firm, and the Cuba Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also attended a reception at the home of the U.S. Ambassador to Cuba, Jeffrey DeLaurentis, where he met with Ambassador DeLaurentis and representatives from various businesses, the U.S. government and cultural organizations from the U.S. interested in expanding and strengthening U.S.-Cuba relations.
