FOOD FOR THOUGHT FROM MESIA PRESIDENT

Hadi Tahboub
President

Solar Projects are picking up in the region. Abu Dhabi, Jordan, and Egypt are generating organic projects momentum.

It's been quite a busy month at MESIA. Our Trade mission to Jordan, catering to both the Jordanian and Palestinian solar energy markets were a spectacular success. We were honored that the Secretary General of the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR)has exclusively announced the Round 3 Solar PV IPP project (200MW in four 50MW packages). Also, following a pleasant 2 days of industry networking, we saw at least 100MW of other solar projects (under the wheeling program and roof top requirements) being requested by local Jordanian facility owners), much to the delight of our visiting trade mission delegates.

On market trends, we're witnessing a momentum in smart grid and smart metering developments in the MENA region, to help accommodate solar energy projects expansions. Unlike the relatively modern power grids of Gulf emirates like Abu Dhab and Dubai, Jordan and specifically Egypt are drawing up plans to develop their nation-wide power grids which were established in a pre-micro processor era.

Kudos to Abu Dhabi and in particular the Regulation and Supervision Bureau of Abu Dhabi for kick starting the initial process of building up public dialoge on the prospect of roof top solar net metering for the emirate.

Moving northwards, the kind chairman of SEWA (Sharjah Electricity & Water Authority), Dr. Rashid Alleem shared his thoughts with MESIA about SEWA's tangible plans to explore the solar energy on a regulated level.

MESIA is partnering with Reed Exhibitions on developing the conference agenda as well as the MESIA Pavilion at the 2017 World Future Energy Summit (WFES) & exhibition. We have a sizable circle of MESIA members supporting both aspects of the event (conference + exhibition), availing themselves to lucrative members privileges as discounted exhibiting rates. Also, I highly recommend everyone in the solar industry to apply for the MESIA Solar Awards held during the WFES event. There will be 10 categories to apply to, and the selection would be from a circle of solar power industry elite who's who. Please follow the link below in this newsletter for more details and to apply.

Who's who

Sushant Arora

Regional Head - Middle East

CleanMax Solar

"What are you doing?"
CleanMax Solar is providing solar and sustainability solutions to corporate customers. Today, we are primarily providing solar power – either from installations on our customers’ roofs, or from our various solar farms, through the grid. We provide solar on a “build-own-operate” model, which means we make the entire investment in the solar plant, and our customers pay only per kWh of power they receive.

Corporates tend to find this model very attractive, because it means they don’t need to deploy capex in a non-core investment, and they don’t need to take on the various performance risks of a solar plant. It tends to be much easier for large corporates to sign an “energy sale” contract than to get capex approvals.

We have since expanded internationally – primarily to the middle east, and possible in select markets elsewhere. We see conditions there which are very suitable to our build-own-operate corporate solar model, and we are looking to leverage our experience in India and our low-cost, world class team to play a leadership role in these markets as we did in India.

"How did you start your journey in the solar industry?"
We started out in India in 2011, when the rooftop solar industry in India was still very nascent, and the build-own-operate model was non-existent.  CleanMax was the only build-own-operate rooftop solar player at the time, and the economics were challenging. While solar costs were declining, we still needed government subsidies to compete with grid power.

Customer education was also a time-consuming process, and sales cycles were extremely long. If that had continued, the small project sizes would not have justified the amount of time and high-quality resources to close the deals we did.

This changed as time went on. Solar costs steadily declined, while grid electricity tariffs marched steadily upwards. Customers gradually become more aware of the opportunities, and sales cycles reduced. Project sizes also increased as we moved into large industrial rooftops, and after we stopped relying on government subsidies

"What is your most memorable moment in solar?"
The turning point came for us when, over the course of  year or so, we could suddenly offer solar tariffs which were lower than grid tariffs in every major state in India. This happened for a combination of reasons. Module prices declined sharply. We also reduced our build costs significantly as we achieved greater scale and built greater in-house capabilities.

Once we reached this point, the market exploded.  I remember very suddenly noticing that instead of CleanMax always introducing the concept to customers, rooftop solar was suddenly on the agenda of every major corporate in India.

As the rollercoaster accelerated, CleanMax has managed to maintained its #1 position in the Indian market even as competition grew, in large part because of our disciplined focus on the corporate segment. As we look to the Middle East and elsewhere, we are looking to lead the same transformation there.
