"If you have ever had one single thought that you wanted something more for your life, please heed that thought. I believe it is the voice of your own heart asking you to become whole again."

(excerpt from Recovery 2.0: Move Beyond Addiction and Upgrade Your Life)  Tommy Rosen

Healing is a life-long journey, not a one time event. It requires a passionate commitment and dedication to the goal. Sometimes, not all conditions, illnesses or diseases can be completely "healed", but they can, at the very least, be significantly improved and managed with the right interventions.
Being healthy is not always defined by the "absence" of disease or illness. It may also mean living and functioning as optimally as possible with your condition, finding harmony and balance in the midst of the storm, while continuing to strive for a more optimal level of health.

Substance Abuse Disorder...a disease, not a moral failing.

Breaking the silence, offering solutions and ending the stigma of
Substance Abuse Disorder;
An Impassioned Plea.

Substance Abuse Disorder/Substance Use Disorder is currently classified as a disease. This new term is being used in a attempt to remove some of the stigma associated with the subject of drug addiction.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), no longer uses the terms substance abuse and substance dependence, rather it refers to substance use disorders, which are defined as mild, moderate or severe to indicate the level of severity, which is determined by the number of diagnostic criteria met by an individual. Substance use disorders occur when the recurrent use of alcohol and/or drugs causes clinically and functionally significant impairment, such as health problems, disability and failure to meet major responsibilities at work, school or home. According to the DSM-5, a diagnosis of substance use disorder is based on evidence of impaired control, social impairment, risky use and pharmacological criteria.

That is the definition of Substance Abuse Disorder, but it is so much more than the words written.  It is a disease that affects every aspect of one's life; the spiritual, emotional, mental, physical, family and social.   Like any disease, it doesn't just affect the afflicted, but everyone in its path.

The following has been excerpted from Why is addiction called a family disease.~By Kathy Brock Frasier, Regional Director, The Addict's Mom.

"Why is addiction called "a family disease."?  Addiction is called a "family disease" yet many will dispute this by responding "I do not have the problem. He/she has the problem because he /she is the one taking drugs." However, addiction wraps its tentacles tightly around those closest to the person with the drug dependency, most typically family and friends. Good times, family events, love, happiness and joy are replaced by an obsession to stop the destructive behavior of the addict.

Following many attempts, strategies and years spent to stop the addict from taking drugs, the failed cycle remains in place and family dynamics change.  Living with an addict causes severe trauma to everyone within the home. The stress brought about by addiction often manifests itself through physical ailments, including high blood pressure, headaches, frequent colds, chest pains, panic attacks and post traumatic stress to name a few. Because we are so busy worrying about others, we fail to take care of ourselves. Brothers, sisters and spouses often feel excluded and unimportant, ultimatums are demanded to choose between the substance abuser and other family members, and strife in the household has become the norm. The family begins to disintegrate and resentment festers. The entire family feels anger, sadness, depression, fear, loneliness, jealousy, shame, inadequacy and failure. Purses and wallets become bedtime companions, deadlocks are placed on bedroom doors, valuables are hidden away in locked safes and the home becomes a fortress. Finances are depleted, friendships are lost, relationships are damaged, our health is poor and the home is a war zone. It feels helpless."

************************************************************************

This is a difficult subject for me to write about because, like so many other people, I have loved ones that are critically ill; they suffer with Substance Abuse Disorder.  I have seen and felt the pain and devastation of substance abuse firsthand, and, like my loved ones, I became sick and I too needed help.

Having family members with substance abuse issues is, in a word, "devastating".   In an attempt to understand and help my loved ones, I started doing research.  I  read as much as I could about the disease of addiction and researched the current treatment programs available, a very daunting and disheartening process.  Based upon current statistical treatment outcomes, which detail a very low success rate, it seemed my loved ones were doomed to a life of misery.

When I looked into treatment programs, even holistic ones, 12 Step Programs seemed to be the cornerstone.  As part of my research   I attended  AA and Nar- Anon meetings and I am an active member of Al-Anon and attend  weekly meetings . I think the 12 step fellowships are amazing; for me personally Al-Anon was a life saver.  While they can be an integral part of sobriety and aid in the recovery of those that love someone with substance abuse,  I don't think they are the whole answer; there seemed to be a large component missing.  As a holistic health practitioner, I am always looking for the root cause. Why then wasn't the underlying cause that prompted people to self-medicate being discussed as a major component of treating those afflicted with this horrific disease?

During my research, I came across an article that stated that Bill W., co-founder  of Alcoholics Anonymous, was apparently hypoglycemic and became increasingly interested in the relationship between hypoglycemia and alcohol.  Different investigators have found
50 to 96% of alcoholics are hypoglycemic. In a 1998 article in The New York Times, Christopher Wren wrote that drugs or alcohol are linked to 80% of incarcerations.  Additionally, it was discovered that close to 75% of those who are incarcerated are hypoglycemic.  For more information on this subject, please see my December 2015 newsletter. Please view newsletter here.

In 1968, Bill W. pleaded with physicians in a 48-page booklet to adopt the hypoglycemia diet and vitamins, especially B-3, in the treatment of alcoholism. Abram Hoffer, M.D., PhD, writes "Bill Wilson (co-founder of AA) began to take niacin (B-3) in a dose of 3,000 mg daily. Within a few weeks,
fatigue  and depression, which had  plagued  him for years, were gone.  He gave it to  thirty  of his close friends in AA.  Of the  thirty , 10 were free of  anxiety , tension and depression in one month.  Another 10 were well in two months."

In an article entitled "The Irrationality of Alcoholics Anonymous", there is a quote by Bill W. in which he states, "Alcohol dependence is an illness, not a moral failing."  The article goes on to say "Why, then, do we so rarely treat it medically?"

(For more information about the role of hypoglycemia, mental health and addiction see:
The Hypoglycemia Association, Inc.  You can also look at the work of
Joseph D. Campbell, PhD., John Tintera, M.D., A. Hoffer, M.D.)

I followed the thread of Dr. Hoffer's work and found many people who expanded and expounded on the idea of treating the underlying cause, whether it be hypoglycemia or some other mental, physical or emotional issue.  People are successfully implementing programs such as balancing neurotransmitters and brain chemistry, amino acid therapy and treating underlying issues such as depression, anxiety, mood disorders and gut issues like leaky gut and H-Pylori . Dr. Charles Gant, one such practitioner, (referenced below) has reported an 83% success rate in ending patients' addictions using some of the aforementioned  modalities   Many practitioners are also looking at the importance of a clean, organic diet - using food as medicine. (Hippocrates said, "Let food be thy medicine and  medicine  be thy food.")   One of the hallmarks of these therapies is that it affords the individual being treated dignity and respect and  gives them the sense of empowerment that comes from being a responsible  part of the recovery process.

When I finally discovered that their ARE individuals who are approaching this disease from a root cause/alternative perspective I felt like I found the Holy Grail.  What I don't understand is why all of the treatment and recovery centers aren't taking a look at this information and implementing these practices.  The answer to that question and to so many questions in this day and age is the same....follow the money. (To understand this in more detail, I refer you to a candid, informative and quite disturbing 2017 article by Christopher Caldwell called
American Carnage - The New Landscape of Opioid Addiction.  Click here to read article.

We have an epidemic on our hands! I feel it is our responsibility, individually and collectively, to raise awareness about this deadly disease and start to remove the stigma that keeps sufferers and their  loved ones trapped in a world of isolation and pain.   I pray that the powers that be make resources, programs and services available to all those who are afflicted, their families and friends and all who are looking for recovery.

I know the best way I can help my loved ones is to help myself.  I have discovered that the tools for recovery are within my reach.  It is not just one thing but a whole bunch of things...remember this is an spiritual, emotional, mental, physical, family and social disease. All areas have to be addressed!! It is a very difficult, on-going journey back to health, but it is possible! I work on my recovery every day.  I have lots of tools; it's my job to use them.

In Al- Anon we end the meeting by saying, "Keep coming back, it works when you work it so work it, you're worth it." .....We are all worth it, and until we step into that knowing, we can not create change.

22 million Americans currently suffer from addiction - only one in ten receives treatment each year.

Untreated addiction costs America $350 Billion annually.

Lasting addiction recovery solutions have been found, but most credible faces and voices to support these solutions have been hidden and silenced for decades...UNTIL NOW.

23.5 million more Americans are living in long-term recovery from addiction.

THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE
is a feature documentary film about the 23.5 million Americans living in long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Deeply entrenched social stigma and discrimination have kept recovery voices silent and faces hidden for decades. The vacuum created by this silence has been filled by sensational mass media depictions of people in active addiction that continue to perpetuate a lurid public fascination with the dysfunctional side of what is a preventable and treatable health condition. Just like women with breast cancer, or people with HIV/AIDS, courageous addiction recovery advocates are starting to come out of the shadows to tell their true stories. The moving story of The Anonymous People is told through the faces and voices of the leaders, volunteers, corporate executives, and celebrities who are laying it all on the line to save the lives of others just like them. This passionate new public recovery movement is fueling a changing conversation that aims to transform public opinion, and finally shift problematic policy toward lasting recovery solutions.

Many Faces, One Voice is a vital record of the lives and testimony of brave people who have come out of the shadows of secrecy and anonymity to fight stigma and discrimination - people who now publicly advocate for the millions of Americans suffering with addiction. Their inspiring stories, told in intimate detail, are brutally honest, often breathtaking, and essential to understanding the success, the hope and the power of recovery.
But even more than that, the book reveals some surprising discoveries the filmmakers made about addiction, recovery, and themselves. Mikhitarian writes about what everyone, including so-called "normal" people, can learn from those who have achieved successful long-term recovery.
"The redemption, the values and accomplishments of these once-suffering people are to be admired," he says, "but, beyond that, their recovery can inspire and teach all of us life-changing perspectives that have profound implications for broad social good."

Till Death Do Us Part??

This line from marriage vows has always struck me as an unrealistic and even unhealthy expectation! After a 20-year marriage we both knew it was time to part and that was the healthiest thing we could do for each other and our children.
As this line can throw off even the most connected beautiful partnerships....this is not the partnership I want to address. The partnership I want to talk about is the partnership to addiction...."till death do us part".
I have been sober 12 years now and I bless each and every day for that! For me it was almost...till death do I part.
What I would have left behind...my two amazing, beautiful children, my loving connected family, friends friends friends, and the work and the message I am clearly here to share!
The excruciating pain of near death, as I have learned from my personal experience and my training and study of the brain, was a bio-chemical thing. Not to say that my childhood trauma, divorce, finances and lack of sober support didn't play a role in my downward near fatal spiral. But my lack of brain neurotransmitters, nutrient deficiency, hypoglycemia and severe anxiety were the addiction pieces that, when addressed and balanced, saved this woman's life! Oh...and has kept her sober, happy, healthy, productive, peaceful and purposeful for over a decade now!!!
This is often, as many of my colleagues in this field refer to as, "the missing link"in addiction recovery; the body bio-chemical link; that imbalance that drives us to madness and near death just to ease the pain.
We are all marvels of design. When well fed and connected to a supportive community we can create magic and feel the fullness of our divinity!

A Guide for the Family of the Drug Abuser - Families Anonymous

Coping with a person who has substance abuse disorder inevitably leaves its scars on all concerned.  Recovery from drug dependence involves the healing of the emotional illness suffered by all members of the family.  If the substance abuser recovers emotionally and family members do not, a serious breach in the family structure may occur.  In order to prevent this serious estrangement, the family must grow emotionally before, during and after the substance abuser's recovery.

For those close to the substance abuser, the time to begin working on their own emotional recovery is immediately, when the drug abuse is revealed in the family.  The way family members can help a substance abuser recover is to begin helping themselves.

* Start with yourself, not with the substance abuser.  Remember that you are emotionally involved.  Learn all the facts about drug abuse, co-dependency and the principles of recovery and put them to use.  Changing your attitudes and your approach to the substance abuser can speed up the recovery process for both of you.

* Attend Families Anonymous, Nar-Anon, Al-Anon meetings or other support groups.  If possible, go to a drug abuse information center, a mental health center or a competent counselor or spiritual leader who has had experience in the field of substance abuse recovery for co-dependents.

* Don't allow yourself to be deceived, exploited or persuaded against your better judgement.  Don't avoid facing the truth - no matter how painful it is.

* Don't lecture, moralize, scold, blame, threaten, lose your temper or cover up the consequences of drug abuse.  These actions may make you feel better temporarily, but they will make the overall situation worse.

* Don't consider your drug abuser's promises of abstinence as a substitute for his/her participation is a recovery program.  Encourage all beneficial activities of the substance abuser and cooperate in making them possible.

* Don't let your anxiety compel you to do for the substance abuser what they should do for themselves.

*Above all, don't put off facing the reality that drug dependence is a progressive illness that gets worse as drug use continues.  Start now to learn, to understand and to plan for recovery.

       Here are some helpful resources.
This is by no means a complete list
but it is a good start.

The Addiction Task Force :
Recognizing that no life is disposable, Governor Chris Christie has acted with a strong commitment to change the conversation in how we treat drug abuse and drug addiction in New Jersey and working past the stigma associated with this disease. In doing so, New Jersey is leading the nation by advancing forward with a focus on treatment first to save lives, restoring hope and giving people the second chance they deserve.
In September 2014, Governor Christie and Pastor Joe A. Carter of Newark's New Hope Baptist Church hosted a summit on drug addiction. The event acted as a call to action and conversation - bringing together public leaders, treatment professionals and advocates, and survivors of drug addiction - focused on ending the stigma around drug addiction and treatment.
The following month, Governor Christie created the Facing Addiction Task Force, a 12-member team of leaders and experts from inside and outside of government chaired by Pastor Joe Carter and co-chaired by former Governor Jim McGreevey to fight addiction through treatment and prevention. The Facing Addiction Task Force has served as the catalyst for the development of reforms and provided critical input for the implementation of treatment-related initiatives, offering feedback and advice stemming from their meetings with community advocates and government officials.

Alternative to Meds (ATMC): Licensed Addiction Treatment and Medication Withdrawal:  The ATMC Sedona addiction treatment center is a world class authority on the physical underpinnings of addictions as well as the psychological and spiritual components. There is a much under-reported science to addiction that might surprise you. Addiction itself is a symptom of something deeper, and abstinence is rarely curative. Most treatment centers heavily focus on either the psychological and social aspects of addiction, or they focus on the spiritual. Those factors are truly valid and we rely heavily upon them at the ATMC Sedona drug and alcohol rehab. The physiological aspects of addiction, however, tend to be underrepresented in most treatment centers.  Ask yourself why one person craves stimulants and another craves sedatives.  Is it because of spiritual or psychological differences?  We think not. There is a biological basis for addiction.

Emotional Freedom Technique - The Tapping Solution -
Nick and Jessica Ortner

EFT, otherwise known as Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a type of Meridian Tapping that combines ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology with startling results.

Tapping can help people overcome many issues. From pain relief, to healing childhood traumas, to clearing limiting financial beliefs, to weight loss, body image and food cravings, to fears and phobias, Tapping is proving to be a powerful, well-researched and easy to learn and apply technique.

Tapping utilizes the body's energy meridian points by stimulating them with your fingertips - literally tapping into your body's own energy and healing power.

One reason Tapping is so helpful for people with substance abuse disorder is its ability to calm anxiety very quickly. Using Tapping, you access the amygdala, located in your mid-brain. The amygdala regulates your body's stress response, a process that can be initiated by a physical craving or an emotional trigger, like a painful memory. With Tapping you quickly disrupt the body's stress response, prompting your body to release fewer "stress hormones" like cortisol and adrenaline, which flood your body during moments of high anxiety. With these hormones at healthier levels, your body and mind relax much quicker.

The relaxation response provided by EFT then allows people struggling with addictions to respond to potentially stressful situations more logically, and make a rational decision about whether relapsing into their addiction will resolve their issues or ultimately cause them more pain. The more substance abusers access their own inner strength, the sooner t hey're able to address the deeper emotional issues behind their addictions.

Garden Gate Counseling and Consulting - Christina Veselak is a
Mental Health Nutritionist who specializes in recovery from trauma, substance use disorders, chronic pain, depression and anxiety, and brain-related disorders such as ADHD, TBI's and ASD.  Through her experience and training, she has come to see how deeply our personal biochemistry affects our mood and behavior. She finds that most of the time she can find effective alternatives to psychiatric medication. What does it mean to be a Mental Health Nutritionist? She helps her clients identify nutritionally-based issues such as protein intake, blood sugar balance & hypoglycemia, food intolerance, and genetic issues in order to reduce depression, anxiety, insomnia, relapse and even some psychotic symptoms. It is her experience that most complex disorders have both emotional and biochemical components to them. Therefore, both are addressed at the same time for quick relief.

Courses in Nutritional and Biochemical Approaches to Mental Health and Addiction Recovery:  Many psychotherapists, psychiatrists and addiction counselors are aware of the vital role diet and nutrient imbalances play in addiction withdrawal and cravings and other mental health symptoms, but don't have the skills or confidence to effectively approach these issues with their clients. To meet this need, The Academy for Addiction and Mental Health Nutrition ( www.addictionnutritionacademy.com),  is offering two online programs for the public. The purpose of these programs are to thoroughly train mental health and addiction counselors in these skills. Graduates will be able to identify which client symptoms are due to biochemical imbalances and to either empower their clients with the tools necessary to effectively address their own imbalances using diet changes and over-the-counter supplements or make the appropriate referral.

Patrick J. Kennedy  is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the nation's leading political voice on mental illness, addiction, and other brain diseases. During his 16-year career representing Rhode Island in Congress, he fought a national battle to end medical and societal discrimination against these illnesses, highlighted by his lead sponsorship of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 -- and his brave openness about his own health challenges.

The son of Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy, he decided to leave Congress not long after his father's death to devote his career to advocacy for brain diseases and to create a new, healthier life and start a family. He has since founded the Kennedy Forum, which unites the community of mental health and co-founded  One Mind for Research, a global leader in open science collaboration in brain research. Kennedy is also the co-author of "A Common Struggle" which outlines a bold plan for the future of mental health in America.

Leah Lund: One Whole Health  and it's my mission to help you feel good on purpose through practical self-care rituals, beginning with Neuro Nutrition. Neuro Nutrition means feeding your brain the nutrients it needs to begin making and storing these feel good chemicals again (or maybe better than it ever has). Whether you are completely burned out or you're holding things together but feel like something's got to give, she can teach you how to feed your brain to feel healthy, happy, successful and satisfied and free yourself from anxiety, bad moods, cravings, emotional eating, depression, low energy, overwhelm, poor sleep, focus problems and much more.

Leah believes a well fed brain is a springboard to personal momentum and spiritual maturity. She wants you to know that the way you're feeling is not who you are - it's your brain and it can be repaired. This is not about willpower or positive thinking, it's a physical function that can get "out of shape" just like a muscle. Once your brain is well fed and happy, you'll be able to get yourself to do the things you've never been able to get yourself to do - like train your mind, quiet your thoughts and step into your biggest dreams and desires.

80% of people in the US are affected by neurotransmitter deficiency. Brain Chemistry Depletion (neurotransmitter deficiency) happens when your brain can't make and store reserves of "feel good chemicals" and this leaves you feeling drained, down, unmotivated and overwhelmed. This missing link could be keeping your joy and fulfillment at arm's length. It starts in your head, but it's not in your imagination.

Many H ands Sustainability Center, located in Barre, Massachusetts, is a nonprofit educational center established in 2007 to provide education about sustainable living, organic farming, and good nutrition. The Center is an outgrowth of Many Hands Organic Farm, which, since 1984, has offered over 300 educational workshops on food/nutrition and organic farming and has helped launch a number of successful farm education programs across Massachusetts.

There is an extensive document on their website that has been prepared by Many Hands Sustainability Center (MHSC) as part of its Nutritional Education and Job-Training Program, a program that offers former prisoners recovering from drug and alcohol addiction an opportunity to develop job skills, learn about all aspects of organic farming, and become educated about proper nutrition and healthier lifestyle choices. This document has been prepared to educate people about how drugs and alcohol can disrupt the normal functioning of the body and how better nutrition can help diminish some of these biochemical and digestive problems. This document only focuses on one specific component of a comprehensive recovery treatment program - better nutrition. It is not intended to be used as a substitute for a doctor's advice or as a recovery treatment program.

Reclaim Your Brain by Hyla Cass, M.D.   In order to Reclaim Your Brain it is important to understand your brain chemistry, the mind-body connection and the relationship between mental health and physical well being.  Depression, anxiety, panic obsessions and addictions are too often considered to be a matter of "Mind over Matter."  Most mainstream medical doctors overlook the fact that mood, behavior and mental performance all depend on your balance of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers of the brain.
