TOKLAT GALLERY

Hello My Friends,

This morning (August 5), as I started my morning constitutional around Crown Mountain Park with the  dogs, I saw a couple of bluebirds and that made me very happy. As I ended my walk, I wondered why it was that I always go around the track counter clockwise? Which got me thinking about someone having once remarked how my  family so often swam upstream. Which brings me to my counter intuitive plan  to close the gallery from August 11th to the 14th (gallery closed for the Art Walk). That "plan" is now THE plan thanks to this image.

This is my father holding some of his marquetry art work. It was taken  at Toklat at Ashcroft in  1954 and printed in what was probably the Aspen Times: "Stuart Mace, Aspen kennel man displays unique wood paintings."   That kennel man also made that sled!   The Rocky Mountain Marquetry Guild (I show several of the Guild members' art in the gallery) will be hosting the American Marquetry Society's national show in Longmont with the opening reception on August 11.   The siren call continues in that the Loveland Sculpture Show (where I have not been in over a decade) is right up the road. And so I shall toodle off in my little red Prius, up and over the mountains to the Front   Range and the land of the Container Store. I will also be visiting my 96 year old uncle who clings to life in the medical care unit of Fraser Meadows retirement community.

This image came to my attention just yesterday. I have been given a stupendous gift - the funds to have all of my father's photographic images scanned. Then the gift I will give myself, my family and the Aspen Historical Society is archiving the images with an excel spread sheet. To give you an idea of the scope: my father was born in 1919 and began taking photographs in high school if not before. His father, who died when he was four, was a photographer for the Denver Post, as was his uncle Charles.

Ah, there is more to this story - so much material for many more newsletters!
