Save the Date for fall retreats!
Fellows, we hope you are all enjoying the long days of summer!  We certainly are, AND we are hard at work planning for fall retreats!  We hope to see a lot of alumni there to welcome the 2017 Fellows, and to re-connect with each other.  Basic working agendas have been posted on the website (links below), and invitations will soon be going out.  In the meantime, please save the date for the fall retreat of your choice!  Highlights:
  • All-day leadership training on Saturday, with new modules for returning alumni;
  • Our signature campfire time;
  • Inspiring speakers on Sunday!  In New England, we are honored to have Sherri Mitchell, Executive Director of the Land Peace Foundation, join us to talk about her deep experience with the protection of indigenous rights and sacred sites.  Ms. Mitchell is a Penobscot Indian, born and raised on the Penobscot Indian Nation in Indian Island, Maine.  In California, we will announce our speaker shortly!
New England :  September 15-17th, Harvard Forest
California:  October 13-15th, NatureBridge at Marin Headlands

Two Leadership Grants Awarded

In May, the Switzer Foundation awarded two Leadership Grants, both of which support new staff positions for graduating Fellows.

Putting Science to Work in the Rapidly Warming Gulf of Maine:  Marissa McMahan, PhD, Northeastern University, has been hired as Senior Scientist with Manomet, based in Brunswick, Maine.  Marissa will lead several projects focusing on helping Maine's fishing communities develop climate adaptation strategies to respond to the rapidly warming Gulf of Maine.

Air Quality and Environmental Justice on the U.S./Mexico Border:  Carolina Prado, PhD, UC Berkeley, will work as Senior Research Scientist with the Environmental Health Coalition in National City, California, on issues related to environmental justice and public health.
Fellows' work in Environmental Justice highlighted in spring newsletter

Most of you probably saw our spring newsletter that went out on June 29th, highlighting the work of several Fellows whose work spans an array of disciplines but with the common theme of environmental justice.  If you missed it, check it out here.
Fellows at conferences

Are you heading to a conference and might like to know if other Fellows will be there?  Getting together at conferences is a terrific way to get to know other Fellows who work on similar or related issues!  Last year, on the suggestion of a Fellow, we created a spreadsheet that all of you have access to, where you can post your conference attendance to see if other Fellows will be there.  As a reminder, here is a link to that spreadsheet - please use it at will!  Below is a list of two upcoming conferences we know of.  If you will be attending, please add your name to the spreadsheet and we can help you arrange a get-together with other Fellow attendees.
  • International Congress for Conservation Biology, Denver, CO - July 26-29
  • Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting, Portland, OR - August 6-11
