Hatred and its terrible expressions are in the news a lot these days.

What we often don't hear about is the ways in which people compassionately and bravely reach out to one another when times are tough.

Shortly after a siege in a café in Sydney, Australia, when 18 people were taken captive, one woman, Tessa Kum, read a Twitter post from an Islamic woman who had stopped wearing the hijab in public because she didn't feel safe. Kum tweeted back, "If you don't feel safe alone, I'll ride with you." Those words started a hashtag and a movement in the city.

And in London, after four people were killed by terrorists on Westminster Bridge, women and men of different faiths formed a human chain across the bridge.

Humans reaching out to other humans in heartfelt ways... this, too, is radical joy for hard times. Practicing attention, compassion, and brave creativity in damaged places reminds us of all we are capable of doing to help other people. And reaching out to people in need opens us up to finding and making beauty for the places we love.
