New Directors Workshop
Round Table for New Directors: Did you know that just about 40% of member library directors are new to their positions within the past three years?
 
New and "new-ish" directors are invited to join us for the MHLS Round Table for New Directors event scheduled to be held on Wednesday, September 6th after the Directors Association meeting in the MHLS Auditorium from 12:30 pm-2:30 pm.
 
This event is designed for member library directors who have been in their positions for three years or less to give them the opportunity to meet with others dealing with similar situations and to find answers and contacts to help you in your day-to-day life at the library.
 
Our guest speaker will be Sue Ray, Director of the Catskill Public Library. Our topic: Hiring, Firing & In Between. At this workshop we will cover:
  • Best practices for filling a vacant position
  • On-boarding new employees
  • Staff Evaluations
  • Progressive discipline techniques

It's Summer Reading Report Time!  All member libraries are required to submit an online Summer Reading Program final report. The Summer Reading Program final report contains information needed for member library Annual Reports as well as to provide New York State [NYS] with important data about public library summer reading programs.

Member libraries now have access to the Summer Reading Program final report form  for 2017.  You can access the report at http://bit.ly/2unJ5dQ  All reports will be due by  Monday, September 11 .   A PDF preview of the questions is available at http://bit.ly/2hrouV3  Questions about the report should be directed to Kerstin Cruger, [email protected] or 845.471.6060 ext. 250.

Professional Development
The American Library Association (ALA) is now accepting applications for the 2018 class of Emerging Leaders (EL).  The ALA EL program is a leadership development program which enables newer library workers from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. It puts participants on the fast track to ALA committee volunteerism as well as other professional library-related organizations. Apply now for Media Literacy @ Your Library opportunity for public libraries: The American Library Association (ALA), in collaboration with the Center for News Literacy at Stony Brook University, invites public libraries to apply for Media Literacy @ Your Library, a pilot program that will train library workers to help their adult patrons become better news consumers. Programming
The American Library Association (ALA) has opened the application period for grants to develop public library programming that promotes computer science (CS) and computational thinking (CT) among youth. The grant opportunity is the latest phase of the Libraries Ready to Code (RtC) initiative, sponsored by Google. Libraries will be selected to receive grants of up to $25,000 to design and implement youth coding programs that incorporate Ready to Code concepts. Through these programs, the library cohort will collaboratively develop, pilot and rapidly iterate a "Ready to Code" toolkit containing a selection of CS resources for libraries and an implementation guide. Sustainable Libraries
Banned Books Week , the annual celebration of the freedom to read, will be held the week of September 24th in 2017. For this year's celebration, the coalition of organizations that sponsors Banned Books Week will emphasize the importance of the First Amendment, which guarantees our inherent right to read.

Job Openings
The New Lebanon Library seeks an energetic, imaginative, full-time Library Director who is committed to patron service and community outreach.  The New Lebanon Library, a member of the Mid-Hudson Library System, is a vibrant small-town free association library that serves a diverse population of full-time residents and second-home owners. The position requires strong leadership and interpersonal skills as well as excellent managerial and organizational ability. We expect the Director to keep abreast of changes in the evolving role of libraries and to participate in professional activities and associations while overseeing all the day-to-day operations of the Library.
