City Park Renovation Now Complete, Playground & Pavilion Open
The totally renovated Cumming City Park is now complete.
Finishing touches were recently put on the new recreation building, which opened for art, dance and fitness classes in the spring. In October, the multi-purpose area of the building was completed. This area includes four 1,225-square-foot rooms that can be used separately or combined for up to 4,900 square feet of open space for events, including receptions, parties or meetings.

In September, the City Council approved rules and a fee structure for use of the multipurpose rooms, which are available for rent to the public and organizations such as civic clubs.

City Park's new playground and outdoor pavilion opened last week. The area features covered picnic tables and modern playground equipment. Thanks to a donation of more than $12,000 from the Cumming Civitan Club, the playground also offers equipment that is accessible to special needs children.

Did you know? Space in the new multipurpose area is available in two-hour time blocks, ranging from two to eight hours in total duration, making the facility perfect for a wide range of events.
Council Designates Nov. 12 Poppy Day, Honors Veterans' Sacrifices
The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary was recognized by the mayor and council during the October meeting.
The Red Poppy is regarded as a symbol of sacrifice made by veterans. In honor and memory of Cumming's veterans, the City Council approved a proclamation designating Nov. 12, 2016 as Poppy Day in Cumming. The proclamation asks  all citizens to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by wearing the Memorial Poppy on Nov. 12 and consider making a donation to a veterans organization.

The Council approved the proclamation at the request of American Legion Auxiliary Post 307, which accepts donations for artificial poppies to raise funds that benefit hospitalized and disabled veterans. The group will be accepting donations for the poppies at Chick-fil-A in Lanier Crossing and Walmart on Market Place Boulevard from 8 a.m. to noon on Nov. 12.

The proclamation notes that "a nation at peace must be reminded of the price of war and the debt owed to those who have died in the wars."

Also during the October meeting, the Cumming City Council:
  • Approved a motion to continue the City's annual support of the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission, which provides a variety of services to 13 counties and 38 municipalities in Northeast Georgia. These services include growth and development management, technical assistance, and programs that improve community services and quality of life for residents.
  • Approved funds to replace the HVAC unit and control systems for Council Chambers, located on the third floor of City Hall; a management contract for the Cumming Playhouse for 2017; and a four percent cost of living increase for City employees, which began at the first of November.
  • Approved a list of 53 alcohol license renewal applications for 2017. John Coffman of the Planning & Zoning staff noted that all the applicants had completed background checks, applications, and paid all required fees.
  • Approved the following requests for the Utilities Department: Permission to advertise for bids for a 36-inch water and sewer lines in the Webb Street area; permission to move forward, if necessary, with condemnation of a small portion of property at 302 Tribble Gap Road as part of the Webb Street project; and permission to advertise for bids for a 12-inch water line on Lanier 400 Parkway for use by Forsyth County Schools' future Alliance Academy.
