Our vision is to have a community where no kittens are born wild on the street, no cat  capable of living in a home is lacking one, and no feral cats are wanting for food, water,  and appropriate care and concern.

Another successful SAFCC Volunteer Luncheon

On October 15, SAFCC volunteers, trappers, board members and supporters came together to observe Global Cat Day and to celebrate our SAFCC volunteers at Tomatillos on Broadway. The event was a great success and--based on the feedback--our best volunteer luncheon yet. 

Express-News columnist and guest speaker, Cathy Rosenthal spoke about compassion fatigue--a topic which resonated with many of those in attendance. Artist Ryn Weisz raffled off an opportunity for participants to win a personal pet portrait painted by the artist. Raffle proceeds went to SAFCC's Cat Crisis Fund, which helps sick or injured community cats get the medical care they need. Last but not least, our new logo was revealed via t-shirt! T-shirts are available for purchase for $12 each at our TNR classes.

Thank you to those in attendance for making this event a success. And thank you to our volunteers, without whom we could not do all the work that we do! 
Virginia Brown, 2017 Proctor Award Recipient

Every year at our Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon, the Proctor Award is given to the person who has done the most to support our mission. The SAFCC Board of Directors votes on submissions from the public. There are always many worthy candidates and thank you to those who took the time to submit nominations.

This year's recipient, Virginia Brown, exemplifies what it means to be a valued SAFCC volunteer. Virginia is pictured with Susan Schmahlenberger, our 2015 Proctor Award winner, who nominated Virginia. As a helpline volunteer, Virginia shared resources and information with the community, tackled difficult TNR projects on her own and as a part of the SAFCC Trapper Team, spread the word about TNR and SAFCC by speaking to HOAs, and has saved numerous cats and kittens off the streets as a foster for SAFCC's Adoption Program. Congratulations, Virginia, and thank you!

"I have learned and grown from each and every person I have met in the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition," Virginia said after receiving the Proctor Award. "I am grateful to be part of the rescue community and an honor to be selected for the Proctor Award."  
SAFFC receives Petco Be a Lifesaver grant          

Last month, our Community Cat Adoption Program was awarded a $630 grant for  The Petco Foundation's Be A Lifesaver Adoption weekend on October 7 and 8. CCAP received the grant monies for adoptions performed in our Petco locations that weekend. Good job, CCAP!
SAFCC at the Leon Valley Pet Festival

On a bright, cold Saturday before Halloween, Leon Valley residents and pets in costume paraded at the Civic Center. SAFCC volunteers and Leon Valley residents Sally, Raymond and Carolyn (as well as volunteers Sandy and Kay) staffed an information booth at the event. This family-friendly event also featured a vaccination clinic and was a great opportunity to share     resources about community cats. 
Help these babies stretch their legs--be a temporary foster!

This is an urgent plea for temporary fosters so our Petco cubicle cats can get a much-needed break. We are asking for fosters to keep our cubicle cats for 2-3 weeks to let them stretch their legs and run around. SAFCC will provide food and litter, you provide fun and love.

Deacon was found in the parking lot of his foster mom's church. He is cuddly sweet 8-month old boy and loves people and cuddling on your lap. He is currently located at our Stone Oak Petco habitat.These two cats are only a few of the cats we have that could use a break. San Antonio Area Foundation awards SAFCC Trapper Team grant                     

The Animal Services Community Advisory Committee and the Board of Directors of the San Antonio Area Foundation, awarded a $32,000 grant to the San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition for our Trapper Team. We are appreciative of this generosity that demonstrates the Area Foundation's belief in the importance of the work we do.  

Our Trapper Team program supports our efforts to do TNR on cats that are fed by the elderly or disabled, and at businesses or apartment complexes where there is no one else to trap.

The Animal Care Services Community Cat Program is a free program targeting free-roaming cats/kittens that live outside in the community. It does not provide any medical paperwork since every cat receives an ear tip which indicates that the cat/kitten has been sterilized and vaccinated. If you require paperwork for any reason please utilize the other clinics for your spay/neuter services.

Petco volunteers urgently needed

We are currently looking for new Petco volunteers!    SAFCC has been fortunate to have the donated space at various Petcos for our cat habitats, to be maintained by an all-volunteer staff. Petco provides the space, SAFCC provides the training and supplies, but the volunteers do all the cleaning and care of the cats while they are there.  

Volunteers dedicate 1-2 hours one day a week to clean and play with the cats. We are saving hundreds of lives and our Petco stores are a major reason we are able to pull kittens off the streets. We can only help them if we have volunteers that can feed and provide a clean environment. We promise spending an hour or two once a week with our adorable cats/kittens will make you happy! The cat habitats provide a great opportunity to find families for our cats and also alleviate the strain of some from our cat fosters. Please help us to keep these habitats by volunteering just one day a week!

Adoption event volunteers needed 

We also have a need for volunteers at our adoption events. These events are a great opportunity to market the adoptable cats and kittens in our care and to spread the word about the work we do.  

Our adoption events are held on the second and fourth Saturdays at these Petco locations, between 12-4 (time is flexible). There is a particular need at our Stone Oak Petco location. If we are not able to hold events at this location, we are at risk of losing our cat habitat there. 

Volunteer help involves:
  • setting up tables and crates (provided by SAFCC)
  • placing our adoptable cats and kittens housed in the cat habitats in crates for visibility
  • alongside experienced volunteers, would help answer any questions and provide adoption application to interested individuals.

Brooks Spay/Neuter clinic hosts mixer for rescues

The Brooks Clinic staff showed SAFCC and other rescues why this is the "Best Little S/N Clinic in TX" with their animal rescue mixer. Food mixed with fun as rescue groups got to meet and get to know each other. Dr. Hawkins gave a tour of the facilities to all in attendance. 

SAFCC won one of the raffle prizes--five S/N surgeries to include rabies and nail trims for only $20 each! This will help with cost savings for SAFCC's Community Cat Adoption Program! 

Thanks again for the event, Dr.Hawkins and staff! If you haven't already had an opportunity to take your feral cats here for surgery, be sure to make use of this resource. This clinic takes up to 10 ferals for spay/neuter each day.
