Opening Night is a Thrilling Night,
Filled with Excitement, Ruach & Victory
Opening Night! The excitement was palpable in the building all day, as everyone was looking forward to the varsity basketball team's first home game of the season. Following night seder, all the students who stayed for the game received STORM dri-fits to wear as they cheered on our team. Students and teachers alike enjoyed a BBQ dinner and then it was time for the pre-game festivities. As the team was announced to roaring cheers and applause, the traditional TABC STORM spirit was felt throughout the gym. Waterbury Yeshiva turned out to be a formidable opponent, with a very tight and competitive game leading into half-time. The bubble soccer half-time show was a fun time for the brave players and those on the sidelines as well. During the second half of the game, TABC headed into the lead, and by the fourth quarter slowly widened the gap with incredible play by its talented players. In the fourth quarter TABC stayed on top to win the game 58-44. Our STORM pride brought the fans running onto the court to congratulate the team for a very successful win. It was a fun night enjoyed by all. For more pictures, click here.

Lot and his Daughters After Sodom:
The Psychology of Memory
Rabbi Dr. Eliezer Schnall's AP Psychology classes analyzed challenging statements of Rashi and Siftei Chachamim in this week's parsha, Parshat Vayeira, in light of contemporary psychology research. For an intriguing "Torah U'Madda" Shabbat table d'var Torah, ask your son to explain the account of Lot and his daughters in the context of memory research. Rabbi Dr. Schnall's research on Lot and memory is published in the Journal of the History of the Neurosciences
Junior Class Visits Lower East Side
"Once I thought to write a history of the immigrants in America. Then I discovered that the immigrants were American history,"  was an observation made by Pulitzer prize winning historian Oscar Handlin. On Wednesday, Nov. 1st, the entire Junior class, journeyed to  the American Jews' "Plymouth Rock," New York's Lower East Side, to relive the past. This trip is an integral part of their unit of study on the various "waves" of immigration to the United States,

Our first stop was the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, where students were broken up into separate groups to learn about the immigrant experience through different lenses. One group, "Sweatshop Workers," explored how many immigrants tried to balance work, family and observing their religion, all within the cramped tenements they lived and worked in. A second group, "Hard Times," discovered how two families, one Jewish and one Italian, were able to survive different economic depressions between 1863 and 1935. The last group, "Victoria Confino," visited with 14 year old Victoria, who was living in the tenement in 1916. Students enjoyed asking her questions in order to gain a better perspective on life in the tenements.

From there, as we made our way to the Eldridge Street Synagogue, due to many requests, we made a pit stop at "The Pickle Guys." Many students loaded up on containers of their favorite flavored pickles straight out of the barrels. At the Eldridge Street Synagogue tour, we were able to learn more about a magnificent historic landmark, a shul opened in 1887, built by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. This institution serves as a marker of the largest wave of Jewish immigration to the Lower East Side. Our guide, Rachel, shared stories of Jewish immigrant life and explained the great architecture and historic preservation which is on-going at the museum.

Everyone agreed that the trip was a success and History Deptartment chair, Mrs. Cary Reichardt, would like to thank all those who assisted her as chaperones: Ms. Hoenig, Mrs. Kopel, Mr. P, Mr. Erlich, Mr. Schwartz and Mr. Zirman. Todah Rabah!

Tzurba D'Rabanan Celebration
Rabbi Mandelstam's Tzurba D'Rabbanan shiur had a seudah to celebrate their accomplishments in learning as they finished their first round of the YU Bekiut program bechinot.
Rabbi Aryeh Leibowitz Visits
The juniors and seniors had the privilege of hearing a shiur from Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz this week. Rabbi Lebowitz is the Rav of Beis Haknesses of North Woodmere and a Magid Shiur in Lander's College. In his insightful shiur he compared former Oakland Raiders player Barret Robbins with Lot, conveying the lessons to value Avodat Hashem as the main priority of one's life and to strive to find an environment that will strengthen that value. Rav Lebowitz came as a representative of Camp Kaylie, a summer option of fun and chessed where many TABC students choose to spend their summers.
Torah Bowl Victory
Continuing their winning ways at the match played at JEC on Wednesday, the TABC Torah Bowl team consisting of Ephraim Helfgot '20, Nathanael Vinar '19, Avraham Kahan '19, Yehuda Mazin '21 and Shmuel Adler '18 won all of their contests against the opposing teams.

Under the direction of Rabbi Ezra Wiener,  assisted by Manny Landau they beat the teams  from  JEC,  MTA  and Heichal HaTorah.

Finishing the day undefeated TABC is in first place in their division.
100th Anniversary of Balfour Declaration
On Thursday, November 2, 2017 Rabbi Jachter alerted the freshman and sophomore minyan to the centennial of the Balfour Declaration which was issued on November 2, 1917.  Rabbi Jachter noted that a number of TABC students (whose grandparents or great grandparents immigrated to Eretz Yisrael between 1917-1939) would likely not be alive today were the Balfour Declaration not issued, since it permitted more than 100,000 Jews to leave Europe before 1939.  Rabbi Jachter noted how the declaration hardly served England's political interests. He argued that it is reasonable to conclude that Hashem had influenced the British leadership similarly to the Tanach's recording of Hashem's influencing the Persian emperor Cyrus to issue a proclamation permitting Jews to return to Eretz Yisrael and rebuild the second Beit HaMikdash.  Rabbi Jachter concluded by thanking Hashem and proclaiming Hodu LaHashem Ki Tov Ki LOlam Chasdo for His orchestrating this history altering event..
