Looking Toward this Sunday November 5, 2017

Scripture: Joshua 3: 7-17
Sermon: Moving On

           This week's lectionary text from the Old Testament follows last week's story of Moses' "retirement" and death before crossing over into the Promised Land.  The people of Israel are given a new leader in Joshua and the first order of business is to consecrate themselves and prepare to cross the Jordan River into Canaan.
            Despite the community's sadness and grief over the loss of their leader Moses, it is time to move on and claim the promise that God has given them.  And so, in dramatic fashion reminiscent of the Red Sea crossing, they walk through the flooding Jordon River and move on into God's future for them.
            On this All Saints' Sunday, we will remember those loved ones from our congregation who have "crossed over" into the fullness of God's presence.  As we give thanks for their lives, we will consider what it means for us to move on towards the fulfillment of God's vision for us at Davidson College Presbyterian Church.

The Geneva Choir will sing  Bright Canaan at the 8:30 service.
The Chancel and Youth choir will sing Tantum Ergo at the 11:00 service .

We will remember and give thanks for the saints of this church who,
since last All Saints' Day have completed their earthly lives.

The Day of Service is here .  And the best way to make a difference is to do something!!  So come out and help us!  Join us for morning refreshments in the Narthex between 8:00 - 8:30 am followed by a brief worship service.  We will head out to worship right before 9 and gather back in the Congregation House between 12:00 - 12:30 for lunch, pictures, stories, and fellowship.  Hope to see you there!

Organ at Davidson    
The next Organ at Davidson concert is November 13 at 7:30 and features David Jaronowski, Director of Music and Organist at Mary, Queen of Peace and director of music and liturgy for the Congregation of St. Joseph. He holds degrees from Cleveland State University and Cleveland Institute of Music, where he was a student of Todd Wilson.  He studied early music at Case Western Reserve. Mr. Jaranowski is also the instructor of choral studies at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, OH, where he directs the Concert Choir and serves as organist for performances. His program will include works by Buxtehude, Bach, Howells, Langlais, and David Conte. The concert is free with donations welcome.
Prayer at the Close of Day    
Combined musical leadership from DCPC and Davidson United Methodist Church offers you "Prayer at the Close of Day:  in the traditions of Compline and Taizé." Compline has its roots in ancient monastic tradition as the last service of the day, when psalms were chanted every three hours throughout each day. Taizé originated in France at an ecumenical religious community dedicated to peacemaking and inclusivity, and its musical style involves short melodies which the congregation sings repeatedly, allowing the words to become a heart-felt prayer. Musicians from both churches will lead us with reflective, unaccompanied music; there will be candlelight, prayers, scripture, congregational Taizé songs, and periods of silence . Join us November 12 at 7:30 in the white chapel of 
Davidson United Methodist Church.
Sunday Dinner with Friends    
Please join the Fellowship Ministry on Sunday, November 19 for an opportunity for DCPC folks to share in a meal together after worship. After the 11 a.m. service, meet near the front steps of the Sanctuary. After a blessing, we will walk to Vail Commons Dining Hall on the campus of Davidson College. The atmosphere in the dining hall on Sundays is wonderful and will provide a great opportunity for our DCPC community to sit together and enjoy fellowship and great food.

Adult:
Covenant (9:45 a.m. Congregation House) November 5, 12, 19, 26- Rev. Charles Raynal, former pastor of this church, will present four sessions on the Gospel of Mark, which may have been the first literary interpretation of the tradition about Jesus in the earliest Christian community. We recognize its contributions to the other gospels. However its own particular vision of the Gospel of God brought by Jesus of Nazareth into Galilee is completing. In looking at Jesus through four responses to him we have unforgettable testimonies to the ministry of Jesus. In the four Sundays in November we shall examine Jesus' impact on an unnamed leper he touched (1:40-45), on an unnamed woman at Bethany (14:3-9), on Simon Peter (8:27-9:1, 14:32-41, 66-72), and on an unnamed Roman centurion and Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Jesus, and Salome, who witnessed his crucifixion and death (15:33-16:8). What can we learn from them as we think again about our response to Jesus?
