We want to thank everyone who made the 7th Annual Festival of Learnshops a huge success, from our wonderful visitors, to the staff and artists that make this event possible. While the Festival of Learnshops may be over for 2017, we have many other exciting workshops just around the corner! Rumor has it Hands on Workshops (HOW) will be happening this fall! Our HOW program allows visitors to create one-of-a-kind pieces with local artists. The theme is still under wraps, but you can sign up to receive the catalog first by going to VisitBerea.com/how-berea.








In addition to HOW, Berea Tourism is proud to announce the return of our popular  Make It, Take It, Give It  holiday workshop series! Starting Thanksgiving weekend, you can make countless memories and unique gifts that would make even Santa jealous. Many classes offer fun for the whole family! I-75 Yarn Crawl and Kick Off Party

August 7th-13th 
Holiday Inn Express & Fiber Frenzy 

Yarn Crawl Kick-Off Knit Night party August 7.  We'll gather at the Holiday Inn Express in Berea on Monday night to get acquainted, knit a bit, and plan out the yarn crawl route!  Call this  859-985-5500 to make your reservation, and be sure to tell them you're with the Yarn Crawl.  During the crawl, show your hotel receipt and receive an extra 10% off your purchase.  We'll have plenty of goodies on the sale table and a boatload of new arrivals especially for this event! 

The Crawl takes place along the I-75 Corridor August 8th-13th.

8th Annual Berea Celtic Festival
 
August 17th-20th 

A city-wide gathering that focuses on traditional,
 authentic and grassroots Celtic music (mainly Irish folk music), draws numerous top-notch musicians and singers to town from near and far. Main venue is Russel Acton Folk Center (212 W. Jefferson St.), but workshops, dance concerts and sessions will take place around Berea.

"Quilts with a Kick"

From July 7th-August 12th, stop in to see some of Kentucky's finest quilts. These functional pieces of art are important to the local and regional culture.

From August 18th-September 30th explore the interesting history of Tattoos at the Berea Arts Council. Stop in on August 18th from 6pm-8pm for the exhibit opening.

"225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky's History"
(Through September 23rd) 

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will honor the 225th
 Anniversary of Kentucky becoming a state, with the exhibit 225: Artists Celebrate  Kentucky's History.  Kentucky has always cherished its history. The preservation of Kentucky stories, places and traditions has shaped its culture today. This exhibit includes over 60 works by 51 Kentucky artists who have recorded and celebrated numerous facets of Kentucky's rich 225-year history.
 
These works capture the essence of Kentucky - including its historical places, people, events, state commerce, agriculture and the state's unique flora and fauna. Accompanied by written stories and histories in each artist's words, this exhibit entices the viewer visually and verbally.
 
Covering Kentucky history from 1775 to the present, this exhibit includes portraits of famous Kentuckians from Daniel Boone to Mohammed Ali.
 
Viewing this exhibit brings Kentucky history to life with sculptures, images and words from Kentucky artists.



"Agates: Kentucky's Jewels"

June 17 - Nov. 18, 2017
This exhibit tells about the history, formation and location of these fascinating and rare works of nature.
 
The exhibit explains how these unusual agates, found primarily in five central Kentucky counties are formed. Numerous lapidary and jewelry techniques for turning this rare stone into elegant jewelry are also shown via photos and text.
 
Displays of original Agate specimens as well as finished jewelry by numerous Kentucky artists, round out this exciting exhibit.

Saturday Tours and Demonstrations
 
August 5th  
-David and Donna Glenn, of Louisville, will demonstrate how they make their wood veneer baskets from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the Center.
 
Baskets created by the Glenns come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are woven using different colored wood veneer, which allows for a wide variety of patterns.
 

August 12th - Jamie Donaldson, of Georgetown, will demonstrate woodturning on the lathe from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
 
Donaldson is active in both regional and national woodturning associations and is in demand as a demonstrator. His works often are asymmetrical and he enjoys using various stains to bring out the natural character of the wood he turns. 


- The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea will offer visitors free guided tours through the Center's gallery exhibit, "225: Artists Celebrate Kentucky's History" and the lobby exhibits.
 
These free, guided exhibit tours will be led by Kentucky Artisan Center staff who will talk about the exhibits, the artists and individual works. Staff will answer questions about the techniques and various processes used, and the objects featured. Tours will be given at 11am and again at 2pm.

August 19th -Three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate a variety of woodcarving styles and techniques on Saturday from 10:30am-3:30pm at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers live in many communities in central Kentucky, and their activities include carving classes, carving demonstrations at schools, monthly Kentucky Artisan Center demonstrations and special events.




August 26th 
-Nick Baute, co-owner of Hound Dog Press, a full service letterpress shop in Louisville, will demonstrate printmaking from 10:30am to 3:30pm at the Center.
 
In operation since 2008, Hound Dog Press specializes in custom invitations, greeting cards, stationery, posters, art prints and design. All the press's finished works are produced on vintage letterpress equipment that ranges from 1892-1960. Nick and co-owner Robert Ronk, handset metal and wood letters and hand carve wood and linoleum blocks to create their illustrations.

-August 4: Indighost is a psychedelic rock band from the Appalachian Highlands area. The band is known for their stunning live visuals, dirty guitar tones, catchy melodies, and vocally driven concert experience. 

-August 11: Roots of a Rebellion hail from Nashville, TN and bolster Reggae-Rock-Dub music for the soul. 

-August 18: Four Leaf Peat presented in partnership with the Berea Celtic Festival Four Leaf Peat is East Tennessee's premier Traditional Irish Band. 

-August 25: Lowdown Brass Band, hailing from Chicago, is a horn-driven ensemble with strong roots in the New Orleans Second Line Tradition. 

-Sept 1: HuDost. The music of HuDost, the Neo Folk World Rock Ensemble from Montreal and NY, weaves a seamless tapestry of sound that renders tears and laughter in listeners, cultivating that nameless longing that abides somewhere in all our hearts.

-Sept 8:  An Evening of Old Time in Old Town Presented in partnership with "Friends of Old Timey Music." Featuring Donna & Lewis Lamb, The (Jean) Ritchie Cousins, David & Delois Sherman with songs of the Carter Family, and Deborah Payne & Sam Gleaves carrying on the tradition.

Fun dancing for the whole family! The beginner's session from 7:30pm - 8pm will teach you everything you need to know, then dance the night away to foot-stomping live music and a rotating cast of experienced callers. Cost is $5 for students and seniors (65+), $8 for the rest of us. And bring a snack for the break if you're so inclined - your fellow dancers will appreciate it! No partner or experience is needed. All dances are taught first and then prompted. We change partners after every dance and are especially welcoming to new dancers! Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat smooth-soled shoes that won't mar the fine wood floor, then get ready for a good workout!

Trolley Tour

Saturdays  10am-4pm through October

Join us for a FREE trolley tour of Berea! Stops will be made at the Kentucky Artisan Center, the Welcome Center in the Artisan Village, Chestnut St., and College Square next to Boone Tavern. 

Feel free to get off and explore the different sections of town, as the trolley will be making rounds until 4pm! You'll learn history and get a chance to see our artists, farmers, restaurateurs, and shop owners at work.

Warm weather is here, and Berea has many outdoor attractions for you to enjoy!  

Maps to hike or bike some of Berea's awesome trails are located at the Welcome Center at 3 Artist Circle off of N. Broadway and on our website at visitberea.com/outdoor

Enjoy scenic views at the Pinnacles and Anglin Falls, take a nice stroll or bike ride along one of our lovely shared use paths through town, or launch your kayak at Owsley Fork Reservoir.
