Scripture: I Samuel 8
Sermon: The People's Choice: How can the stories of the kings of Israel shed light on the politics of today?
Lib McGregor Simmons will preach at 8:30 and 9:45 in Lingle Chapel and at 11 in the sanctuary.
According to a study done in 2015, 90% of Americans at that time believed there to be a crisis in leadership. Apparently such was the case in ancient Israel when the people were dissatisfied with their present and future prophetic leadership and demanded "a king to govern us, like other nations." Samuel thought this to be a terrible idea, and God agreed with him. What follows in I Samuel 8 is a strong description of how corrupting political power can be. Nevertheless, the people continued to demand political change, and the reign of Saul, the first king of Israel, began. (It didn't turn out well!)
We will read I Samuel 8 on Sunday with the following questions, submitted by a DCPC member as a "People's Choice" topic, in mind: Does God lead individuals to rule in today's world? Is all of our political landscape unfolding just as it should? Is there a lesson woven into I Samuel that we can apply in our world today?

DCPC Choir to Sing in Scotland
This week members and friends of the choir join a total of 100 Presbyterian singers in Glasgow and Edinburgh. They will sing in three concerts, including a Festival Concert led by Simon Carrington that will be part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. They will have an evening of song with John Bell and a psalm workshop titled "Singing the Reformation," trying out reconstructions of the raw and compelling Scots language settings of the popular Reformation metrical psalms. The Salvation Army women's shelter is overcrowded. Churches have been asked to offer support between June and November by hosting women in their communities for one or more weeks. We are currently hosting 8 women as our guests the weeks of July 24

Davidson College Presbyterian Church has joined with other faith communities in the Lake Norman region to build a home in the Poole Place neighborhood in Cornelius at 9915 Psalms Street for Fabiola Sanchez and her four children.

committee will be resuming their monthly planning meetings on Wednesday, August 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the church library. If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact Jan Dumford.
