Record Books Due, Achievement Program RSVP, Sweets and Treats Registration

Follow up on- Backpack Buddies Food Drive

A huge thank you to all those who helped collect food for the Hungry to Help project this year.

The food collected at the Farm City Week Banquet and from the competition between 4-H Clubs and FFA Chapters was divided between two schools in the county with a
high percentage of Free/Reduced Lunch participants and a need for additional assistance. Those were West Smithfield Elementary and Selma Middle School. Both of these schools have a 90% of Free and Reduced Lunch participants.

Other food that doesn't meet the requirements of Backpack Buddies will be taken to the Smithfield Rescue Mission and Clayton Area Ministries.

Prior to this evening 4232lbs had already been collected by 4-H and FFA groups.
This year FFA Chapters and 4-H Clubs were challenged in a contest to see how much food they could raise. The winning FFA Chapter was from South Johnston High School
FFA.  This group collected 3552lbs of food for their food pantry. The food they collected goes to help youth in their school and at their feeder schools in the community. Their advisor Candace Parker and school social worker Susan Kelly help with the determination of needs.

Strickland's Crossroads was the winning 4-H Club.  This club collected 205 pounds for Four Oak Middle. They had enough food for 25 boxes to be distributed by the school.

At the banquet we collected 398.56 + 4232 for a total amount collected for the 2016 Hungry to Help Program of 4630.
Prior to this year, the Hungry to Help program has collected 4887lbs of food since 2010.

More forms will be sent out when they become available.  In the mean time, most forms don't change much from year to year, so go ahead and begin getting your information together so you can fill in the forms when they become available.

Also, you can present your resume/accomplishments and information about the scholarship you plan to apply for to someone and they can get your letter of reference done.

You should also go ahead and request several transcripts from your guidance counselor, so you are not waiting to the last minute to secure those.

Volunteer Leader Conference
I am including the Registration Information for the 2017  Volunteer Leader Conference, that Laura sent out earlier today.  The dates are February 3-5, 2017.  The registration deadline is Friday January 6th if you plan to take advantage of the early bird full time registration.  There are some good workshops being taught that you might be interested in.  There workshops can be taken by anyone.  Volunteers and 4-H parents both can benefit.

Please look over the information and let me know if you have any questions.  I need the information on the attached registration form by the deadlines above in order to register you.  It must be done by the county 4-H office.  Also, checks for payment should be made out to Johnston County 4-H and we will mail 1 check from our office for all registrations.

Unfortunately there are no scholarship for attendance this year, however, club volunteers or their designee  who attend for at least Saturday will be given credit for both required leader training for Club Re-charter.

Please share this opportunity with any parents or other volunteers in your club who may not be on the leader list and may want to take advantage of the workshop opportunities.
