DRA Helps United Way "Sprout Into Reading" |
United Way is pleased to announce the start of a new early childhood literacy program - Sprout into Reading - in Dubuque, Delaware, Clayton, Allamakee and Fayette counties, thanks to generous support from the Dubuque Racing Association.
"Because family involvement is one of the top indicators of early literacy success, we developed a cost effective program for our greater service area that provides quality books and includes helpful literacy strategies from trained staff to increase family involvement," Danielle Peterson, United Way President/CEO, explains. Research shows the earlier families become involved in children's literacy practices, the longer lasting the effect.
Sprout into Reading is outcome-based and targets low-income youth ages birth to five years of age. A key focus of the program is to provide direct distribution of books to qualifying children through strategic partnerships with Parents as Teachers of Four Oaks, Helping Services for Youth & Families in Northeast Iowa, Parent Share & Support, Inc., Regional Medical Center - Manchester, Crescent Community Health Center, Dubuque County Visiting Nurses Association, and Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Café
Momentum - Youth Empowerment:
Chad Houser left his career as a fine dining chef to start Café Momentum, a Dallas-based restaurant and culinary training facility. He is transforming young people's lives by providing a positive environment for teens recently released from juvenile detention centers. Café Momentum helps equip employees with job and life skills mentoring, including leadership, social, vocational, financial, parenting and anger management skills. Café Momentum was created through GroundFloor, a social incubator housed by United Way of Metro Dallas.
Mission United - Veterans:
As a former Army Company Commander in the Vietnam War, Stephen witnessed firsthand the struggles that soldiers face when they come home. After his daughter was injured in Iraq, he helped launch and lead Mission United, an initiative in partnership with United Way of Broward County aimed at re-acclimating veterans to civilian life.

Community donors are being sought to serve as investment panelists in the areas of health, education or income. These volunteers will help determine where funding is distributed in the year ahead by reviewing grant applications. The time commitment is mid-January through February or March, depending on availability of the volunteer.
This is a great opportunity to better understand the needs of your community and what organizations are doing to help meet those needs. If you have a passion for improving the health, education and income stability of individuals and families, contact
Chris Chapin-Tilton at 563.588.1415 x 206!
