December 2016
Message from Principal Kuminka

The character word of the month is Joy- Finding a way to be happy, even when things don't go your way.
I would like to thank Mrs. Fulginiti, Mr. Carboni, and the Student Council for demonstrating their compassion to raise for Unicef.  In addition, Student Council's organization of Operation Christmas Child was a great success. Student Council packed and boxed 45 shoe boxes for boys and girls overseas to arrive by the holidays.

During the month of December, Coebourn Elementary will be organizing a service project that supports green efforts and helps children in need. We are working with the Second Chance Toys organization to collect used clean plastic toys to donate. Instead of filling the landfills with a perfectly used plastic toy, these toys could be donated to children who could benefit. This service project will run from December 1-15th. For more information, read the Second Chance Toy Flyer attached to the newsletter.

On January 3, 2017, students will begin a new special schedule, which teachers will send home prior to winter break. Students will now have two days per week of physical education. Library will not occur during the related arts block. However, teachers will schedule an alternative time for children to access the library to check-out and check-in library books. Mrs. Micklo is currently a paraprofessional at Coebourn working with students. She will be assisting and teaching students how to utilize the library and access books.

Finally, I would like to thank Chief McGoldrick of the Brookhaven PD for bringing the Officer Phil program to Coebourn for students k-2. The antibullying and safety messages were valuable.

December 2016
Hello Coebourn families

It's hard to believe it is that time of year already! The Holidays are fast approaching and the PTL is hard at work preparing for the Annual Holiday Shop, but first we'd like to thank the students and their parents that came out to support Coebourn by walking in the 2016 Brookhaven Holiday Parade. We hope you all had fun!

Fall Book Fair was a success once again! Thank you to Heather Karpo for organizing it and a BIG THANK YOU to all of our volunteers that helped out.

Go Card discount cards are still available for purchase- $10 per card. Practical gifts for the Holidays. Lots of great places participating.

The Holiday Shop begins 12/6 and runs until 12/8. All gifts are $2 and we have something for everyone on your child's list! The PTL is still looking for volunteers with clearances to help with gift wrapping and helping the students shop for their gifts. Even if you can only give 45 minutes, it would be a big help! Visit the PTL's website for more info at  www.pdsd.org, select Coebourn Elementary, then under "for the parents" select PTL.

Any students that qualified to receive Joe Corbi's prizes, they are being sorted out this week and sent home with the students.

COEBOURN READERS

Coebourn once again is participating in Scholastic Reading Counts!
The goal of Reading Counts is to create lifelong readers by surrounding students with a wide variety of leveled literature and nonfiction texts in the classroom, in the school library, and at home. With Scholastic Reading Counts! students have a Lexile®-based independent reading program that tracks their success on the books they read, in and out of school. This technology-based program creates a personalized and engaging learning environment that ensures independent reading accountability. Scholastic Reading Counts intends to MOTIVATE students with suggested reading choices that match their interests and reading levels. This program is available to all 2nd through 5th grade students. Students in 2nd grade have a goal of 20,000 words read per month, while students in grades 3-5 are set to reach 30,000 words. Students may choose an independent book and when finished t take a ten question computerized quiz on the book. Seven out of the ten questions must be  answered correctly in order for the students to pass the quiz. The total number of words for the book read will be tracked throughout the year. If the book does not a Reading Counts quiz, students may write a summary of the book to receive credit. Any student who reaches 1,000,000 words will  be recognized both at school and at Brookhaven Borough Council!
Stay tuned......More to come next month about READING COUNTS!!

GO GREEN!!!

Coebourn students EARTH SAVING tip:

Coebourn Classroom Connection
The Wonderful World of
3rd Grade
3rd Grade has been learning about Rocks and Minerals in Science class.  The children have learned about the three types of rocks and how they are formed.  The unit will continue as the children learn about the properties and will use several tests to identify the minerals.   In Social Studies the children spent the first part of the semester learning a lot about the geography of the World. We are now focusing on why and how immigrants came to our country and the challenges they faced.  We will also be learning about how immigrants become US citizens. The 3rd grade also stays informed on current events using the Time For Kids magazine.  The magazine is utilized during our WIN time.  We have been reading informational text and finding text features and main ideas and supporting details as we stay up to date on events happening in our World.  The children are truly enjoying Science and Social Studies!
