PUBLICATIONS FIELD TRIP TO HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA

This weeks Campus Spotlight shines on the Publications class! Last week, the Publications class had the privilege to visit Houston Public Media. When touring the Melcher Center on the University of Houston campus, students ventured behind scenes, learned about jobs beyond the camera, and had the chance to practice several positions themselves. Furthermore, students received helpful feedback and tips on how to better Energy's E-Newsletter. The success of this trip could not have taken place without a number of valuable people: Mr. Eric Ladau, Mr. Ty Wilson, and our very own Mrs. Wilson. Thank you for this memorable experience and for giving back to the Houston community.

OCEAN STAR MUSEUM FIELD TRIP
The Campus spotlight shines on the Freshmen Offshore Oil Museum in Galveston! The museum is an actual oil rig that is no longer in use. Through the Education Outreach Programs, the Offshore Energy Center is committed to promoting awareness and understanding of offshore energy among students and educators.

Pumps and Pipes Field Trip
Today, Energy students had an opportunity to attend Houston's Annual Pumps and Pipes conference, a unique event combining the energy, medical, and aerospace industries to solve the problems of the future.  The conference was held at Exxon Mobil headquarters where our students visited a 3D lab, toured the facility, participated in interactive exhibits, and listened to leaders in their fields discuss the current global problems they are working to solve and how these unique industries can work together.

Student Spotlights
There is a reason you have seen this photo around the school, that is because Jeremiah Edwards is a stellar individual!

Jeremiah is an 11th grader in the Quantum Squad cohort and he is a class act. He is a thoughtful team member who does well in his projects. He is also an avid basketball player.

During our cohort's last field trip to the Liendo Plantation - which happened to be on his birthday, Jeremiah got the opportunity to use Civil War era equipment.
Teacher Spotlight
Ms. De La Rosa is an amazing senior English teacher who has traveled to over 8 NFL football stadiums over the last few years. She attended the University of Houston where she majored in theater for the first few years before studying English.  While in college, becoming a teacher was not something she viewed for her future. Teaching was something only seen as temporary at the time, but as her love for students grew, her passion for staying became stronger.  One of her hobbies involves traveling to different sporting events, and she loves cooking. One of her biggest inspirations - and her reason to teach - are the students.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Today is Israel Cobell's birthday. For those of you who do not know who this incredible person is, he is a senior who does a lot of the behind the scenes work for the Publications class. Thank you for your contributions!

PTO PRAISE: The PTO would like to thank the donors who have supported and contributed to the organization this semester. Thank you for giving back!

LOVELY LOCKHART: As a teacher, Ms. Lockhart goes above and beyond her job description for our school. We value the extra time, sweat, and tears that you pour into this school. You make a difference, thank you!

FRIENDLY FRIEND: Reagan Dennis would like to give a shout out to Christian Netro who recently turned 16. Thank you for being a good friend and a wonderful classmate.

CHALLENGING TEACHER:  Angel would like to give a high-five to Mr. Lamb, "I like challenging your ideas."

POEM PROPONENT: Danny Avalos would like to give a shout out  Megan Camario for helping and supporting him through writing his poem.

STAR TEACHER: Damani Whiskey would like to high-five Ms. Sinders for being a helpful and understanding teacher.

AWESOME ASSISTANCE:  Marco Gulierrez would like to recognize Desi Deivalle for assisting him in history class.

Make it a great day for someone else by publicly acknowledging a member of Energy.

CAMPUS FEEDBACK FROM LAST WEEK

The POSSE Experience
By Chance Bednorz
Earlier in 2016, during my junior year, I was invited to apply to the Posse Houston Foundation. For those of you who may not know what I'm talking about, Posse is an organization that is trying to increase the diversity in leadership positions in America through education. Posse is teamed up with top colleges all across the states, and every year they have thousands of applicants competing for a spot in a college's Posse - a group of ten students that have shown outstanding leadership, character, and are expected to do great things. On top of that, the Posse members also get a scholarship that covers the college tuition, so there are many reasons why one would want to partake in this program. This is my experience as a Posse applicant.

Firstly, I was invited to attend a lunch meeting during school and find out more about Posse. Afterward, I was nominated by Mrs. MacGregor - my dean - for the Posse program and filled out the Posse application over summer. During my senior year, my application was reviewed by the people at Posse and I moved on to the first-round interview. This was a group interview held in a large, open room. For several hours, we were separated into groups of equal sizes, asked to complete an activity that required teamwork, and then split up into different groups to repeat the same process with another group. All of the students had numbers on the front and the back of them, and the Posse faculty walked around, constantly taking notes as we worked.

I completed the first-round interview successfully. From there, I moved on to the second-round interview which was far more personal. They asked me to complete another application prior to my interview, and I was given a list of required materials: my transcript, SAT scores, a piece of recent writing, etc.- to bring in for them on the day of. The second interview took place in a quiet room at the Posse offices. I found out a couple of weeks after my interview that out of 1200 Houston applicants, I had become one of the 20 finalists for Colby College.

After achieving finalist status, I completed the Common Application before my assigned application review with Posse. On the day of my review, a Posse staff member looked over my application and helped me fine-tune everything to send off to Colby College. On December 1st, I had my finalist interview. Alongside me were the 19 other Posse finalists, Posse administrative staff, and Colby College representatives. Similar to the first interview, there were several group activities and both the Posse staff and the college reps were taking notes on what we did. The finalists were broken up into smaller groups where the Posse staff asked us questions about our home life, our interest in the school, what we do for our family, etc. At the end of the interview, we had a Q&A with the Colby College people and gathered together in a circle. We linked arms and said our final thoughts on the entire Posse process, paying each other compliments and giving each other thanks.

Overall, the process was engaging, exciting, and although I did not get into the Colby College Posse; yet, I still am grateful for the experience and encouragement that Posse provided me. I know that with or without Posse, I will graduate college and be successful in anything I put my mind to.
