"Seek the Light, Be the Light"
Spiritual Reflections
By Scott Root, Campus Minister

Gospel for Sunday, November 5, 2017 – 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you,
but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi. As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. Do not be called 'Master;' you have but one master, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted." --Matthew 23:1-12

Reflection-- Servanthood
Our relationship with Jesus is a call to humble servanthood. This is not merely about providing others with service and meeting their needs. Servanthood is a call to a change of attitude and of heart. Jesus was the ultimate role model in servanthood, laying down his life for the salvation of all. We should want to help people out of love for God and our neighbor, and expect nothing in return. When we approach life with a servant’s attitude, God blesses us far beyond any expectation. Servanthood is a result of humble love of God and neighbor.
Saint of the Week--Saint Martin of Tours (November 11)

Saint Martin of Tours is often depicted as a soldier mounted on a horse sharing his cloak with a poor man. He became a monk and then a bishop, but he never lost his love for the poor. He spent a good deal of energy fighting for the Church, and for mercy toward heretics.

For information on more Saints, visit Franciscan Media’s Saint of the Day website .
Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father,
You bless us with so many gifts.
Help us to use our time, talent, and treasure in service of You and our neighbor.
Give us hearts that are open to Your love,
And help us to be true and humble servants each and every day.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
Amen
