Lighting the Way for Students at Ventura Unified School District

The Energy Network (Public Agency Program or Program) offers services to all types of public agencies, including school districts. Improving energy efficiency in schools helps to create a healthier and safer environment -- an environment where students and teachers can thrive. Exterior lighting retrofits can enhance teacher and student security while mechanical retrofits can reduce student sick days due to improved indoor air quality.

Currently, three school districts leverage The Energy Network's Public Agency Program to improve energy efficiency throughout their schools - Ventura Unified School District (VUSD or District), Conejo Valley Unified School District, and Orange Unified School District. Since enrolling in the Program, VUSD has worked alongside The Energy Network to implement lighting and mechanical retrofits at 10 different district facilities to modernize equipment, increase efficiency, improve facilities overall and save money.
"The Energy Network has done a wonderful job and we both have learned a lot since we began working together. We are happy to be part of a collaborative partnership to save energy and the environment through The Energy Network."

-Dave Marshall, Facilities Services Director,
Ventura USD
Addressing outdated lighting was one of VUSD's main energy efficiency objectives for many years and by enrolling in The Energy Network's Public Agency Program, the District was able to see these projects come to fruition. The Program worked with VUSD to break the project into two phases -- phase 1 and phase 2 -- enabling the District to retrofit and replace old lighting technologies with those offering increased efficiency and improved quality. The Program also provided project management support to VUSD throughout the project -- including construction management services, procurement and contract guidance for contractor selection, coordination with investor-owned utilities, utility incentive application assistance, and engineering support.

Phase 1 of the lighting project has now been completed, providing the District with annual cost savings of approximately $110,000 and annual energy savings of over 785,000 kWh. In addition, VUSD is expected to receive more than $29,000 in utility incentives. Phase 2 of the lighting project, as well as the additional mechanical projects, are expected to be completed in 2017.

The Energy Network's Home Energy Tours featured on Lakewood City TV

The Energy Network hosted a Home Energy Tour in Lakewood on Sunday, September 25 and Lakewood City TV was there to capture the experience. The Home Energy Tour was a tour of Justin Potier's Lakewood home for residents, neighbors, and friends alike to see the energy efficiency upgrades done to the home. The upgrades included wall and attic insulation, wall and attic sealing, new ductwork, insulation and sealing, and a new high-efficiency AC system and furnace.

The upgrades on Justin's home were done using the Home Upgrade rebate program. Now Justin says the house is cooler, the air is cleaner, and he is saving money on his electrical bill. This is just some of the many reasons Home Upgrade benefits homeowners. To hear more from Justin and other Home Energy Tour guests, watch the video here.

Participating Contractors and The Energy Network team enjoying breakfast at the Contractor Appreciation Breakfast

Great food and feedback highlighted The Energy Network's Contractor Appreciation Breakfast on November 17 at Pasadena's Central Park Restaurant. Coffee and conversation flowed as The Energy Network representatives shared their thanks with some Participating Contractors who do the heavy lifting for the Home Upgrade Program.

Representatives from RHA and iPermit E Raters were also on hand to answer questions. The contractors felt free to speak candidly and shared their valuable insights that continually help to improve the Program.

The Energy Network reps ready to greet contractors at the IHACI Trade Show

The Energy Network also had a booth at the IHACI Trade Show on November 16. The Energy Network representatives were able to engage with current Participating Contractors and with new faces that are interested in joining Home Upgrade. The Energy Network is always striving to outreach to contractors to improve the experience of contractors and homeowners alike.

At this time of year, we thank all of our Participating Contractors for their diligence and professionalism in bringing Home Upgrade to their customers.
