ISBE seeking comments on College and Career Readiness framework

A group of Illinois superintendents has developed a new multi-pathway College and Career Readiness framework that meets ISBE targets and helps ensure that our students are not defined by a single score on a standardized test. The framework is in concert with the AASA Redefining Ready initiative that Dr. David Schuler (Township High School District #214) helped launch last year when he was president of AASA.

The IASA Board of Directors has been discussing endorsing "Redefining Ready!" but members were concerned how the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) might interpret and implement the initiative. That's why a group of Illinois superintendents, working with education organizations and leaders throughout the state, developed the College and Career Readiness framework -- which can be accessed here-- and presented it to ISBE for consideration.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires states to use multiple metrics to define readiness and ISBE is now accepting public comments for the second draft of its ESSA State Plan. The State of Illinois is attempting to be a leader in redefining what it means for high school students to be college, career and life ready.

The deadline for comments regarding the ESSA State Plan and the College and Career Readiness framework is December 27. Comments can be emailed to [email protected]. If you are in support of the College and Career Readiness framework, a sample template letter of support can be accessed here. Feel free to use the template or share your own professional perspectives and insights. Thank you.
