The OLMA Overview -- December 8, 2016
|
|
I've just experienced my first OLMA Ring Mass and now completely understand why it's one of our school's most treasured traditions. The girls, liturgy, music and, yes, the rings were all amazing. I was also excited to see so many parents and family members present to share this special day. Many thanks to everyone who had a hand in planning this celebration!
Still yet to come today is lunch-making by Interact Club members for the Spirit & Truth Ministry immediately after school and SPEAK UP! tonight at St. Augustine Prep.
We look forward to a great evening of open communication between students and some of the adults in their lives. As a reminder, students who participate in SPEAK UP may dress down tomorrow.
Next week promises to be a fun one as Advent Angels continue to spread Christmas cheer. If you haven't been here in the last two weeks, you may want to stop in to see the lockers. The girls have outdone themselves this year. On Friday of next week, our entire student body, teachers and staff will travel to the Guaracini Performing Arts Center to see The Nutcracker. Our very own Alex Bisignaro will be performing!
Thanks to all of you who attended Parent-Teacher Conferences last week. Academics continue to be our top priority at OLMA. Second-quarter progress reports will be available on the portal next Friday. Please don't hesitate to contact your daughter's teachers with any questions. My door is always open as well.
Wishing you all a safe and festive weekend! -- Mrs. Coyle

Kimberly "Kimmy" Kinkade, Class of 2020
|
|
When it comes to working hard and staying laser focused on being the best that you can possibly be at something you love, OLMA freshman, Kimmy Kinkade is one to watch. A USAG Level 10 gymnast, Kimmy trains at least four hours a day at Atlantic Coast Gymnastics in Williamstown. Once meet season kicks into high gear, she and her teammates will also travel most weekends for competitions.
"Gymnastics is a great sport, but doesn't leave much time for anything else," said Kimmy. " I've missed lots of birthday parties, school dances, day-trips and time hanging out my school friends, but that's all part of it. If you want to be good you have to train constantly, even on those Saturdays when you'd rather stay in bed."
While modest about her abilities, as a Level 9 gymnast, Kimmy qualified for Regionals and Nationals both of the last two years. Her goal is to do it again this year as a Level 10. While her season is just getting started, she performed well at her first meet held last weekend in Pennsylvania. She won the meet, placing first on the floor exercise, uneven bars and vault -- and placing first overall!
Kimmy says that she hopes to compete in college. In the meantime, she's enjoying her freshman year at OLMA. "I love it here because I can be myself without worrying about being judged," said Kimmy. "We all have our own identities and feel free to express them." Despite the hours she spends at the gym, Kimmy made Principal's List for the first quarter of the school year. "With so much going on all the time, I've developed good time-management skills," she said. "It helps a lot with school." Indeed it does. You're amazing, Kimmy. Keep up the hard work.

OLMA Sophomore Recognized for Leadership
|
|
For over five decades, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has inspired young people to make a difference and become catalysts for positive change in their home, school, workplace, and community. Each year, 10.000 high school sophomores from across the country participate in one of 70 State Leadership Seminars. This year, OLMA sophomore, Alex Bisignaro will be among them. Alex was selected because of her natural leadership ability and strong academics. From June 23-25, Alex will move into the dorms at Kean University where the conference will be held. While there, she will explore all facets of leadership and participate in a wide variety of interactive workshops with students from all over the state. Congratulations, Alex! We are so proud of you!

Who wouldn't want to be the jolly elf for a day? If you are looking for a way to make a difference in the life of a child this Christmas, there are no shortage of opportunities. OLMA is helping two organizations: Adopt A Child (with Big Brothers Big Sisters) and The Dream Foundation.
Adopt a Child
Just before Thanksgiving, students had the opportunity to "Adopt A Child" this Christmas. For many of these boys and girls, our gifts will be the only ones they receive. We still have about 15 children left to be adopted, so please see Mrs. Cavagnaro if you'd like to help. All of these children attend local elementary schools.
An OLMA Alumna who works in these schools also put out a call out for winter coats. Needed are boys' sizes: 14, 12, 10, 8 and adult XL. The girls' sizes needed are: 7-8, 6T and 10-12.
The Dream Foundation
The second organization we are working with this year is The Dream Foundation. This foundation helps children (and their families) who are critically ill and in the hospital during Christmas. It was founded by OLMA's own, Mark and Gina Rudolph -- parents of freshman, Mia and sophomore, Madison.
During the week before Christmas, Mark and Gina visit area children's hospitals. They come with a Santa sack full of gifts that will help put smiles on the faces of the children who can't be home on Christmas morning. To help, we are collecting unwrapped toys (large box in the main office hall). We are focusing on toys for children ages: infant to 2; and 12-17. If you can help, please bring in an unwrapped toy next week.

OLMA Soccer: Player and Team of the Year!
|
|
O
LMA is enjoying a double-whammy when it comes to accolades this week as Senior, Tia DuPont was named The Daily Journal's Soccer Player of the Year -- and the OLMA Villagers, the Team of the Year! This season alone, Tia racked up 32 goals and 28 assists and led the Villagers to a 15-6 season! She also broke OLMA's school record for the number of goals scored in a single season.
According to a quote by Tia in today's story in The Daily Journal, it was staying close both on and off the field that made the difference this year. Win or lose, the girls enjoyed being together -- for sleepovers, pasta dinners and activities on the weekends. Of course, behind every great team are dedicated parents and talented coaches. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You were all on to something, as this year's team is one of OLMA's best. Congratulations to all!
