Living Windows

Dozens of downtown storefronts will come to life during the 18th annual Living Windows celebration on Thursday, December 8 from 6 to 8 PM. The event includes ice sculpting, carolers, puppet shows, treats, marshmallow roasting with the Burlington Fire Department, crafts, the festival of trees at the Burlington Apartments, storytellers, free horse drawn trolley rides, and much more. Visitors can stop by Santa's Cottage in Nancy Neafie Park, sample some holiday goodies, and do some shopping, too. Thanks to presenting sponsor Two Rivers Bank & Trust for making the Downtown Partners holiday events possible.
Holiday Shop Hops Continue

Every Thursday evening until Christmas, many downtown merchants will be open late to fit customers' busy schedules. The great majority of retail shopping takes place after 5 PM. Happily, we are seeing more businesses embrace evening and weekend hours (which also plays off the restaurant traffic), making downtown even more of a destination.
Here Comes Santa Claus!

The jolly old elf himself will be greeting visitors in downtown Burlington at Nancy Neafie Park on the corner of Sixth and Jefferson. Santa will be at his cottage during the Holiday Shop Hops on December 15 and 22 from 6 to 8 PM, as well as during Living Windows. There is no cost, and cameras are welcome. Creating fond memories of downtown for families today helps build support for downtown tomorrow! Many thanks to Carl A. Nelson & Co., Beames Welding, and Dick Keith for their assistance with Santa's Cottage.
300 Washington Progress

By now, you've probably heard the great news about the former Typewriter Shop! Downtown Partners has been awarded a $65,400 Main Street Challenge Grant to help put a new roof on the building, as well as a $4900 technical assistance grant to have measured floor plans done. This funding is available because of our status as an accredited Main Street organization. Asbestos abatement is being completed with the help of an Iowa DNR grant, and repairs to a roof drain and truss will be done this winter with emergency grant funding from the state historical society. Locally, the Heritage Trust has also pledged $10,000 in support of the project to resurrect the building. Many thanks to the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission for their excellent work on securing these funds.
