The Holy Family with St Anne and John the Baptist - Fr Steve Rice
|
|
The art for the cover our bulletin comes from a student of da Vinci, Bernadino Luini. The painting of is of the Holy Family, the mother of the Blessed Virgin, St Anne, and John the Baptist.
I love the hands in this painting. The Virgin holds her Son and extends him forward to others. We venerate the Virgin Mother of Jesus because of her fidelity to God's call. In saying yes to Our Lord she introduced him to the world, holding him up for the world to come under his blessing. St Joseph holds his staff. He was a carpenter and not a shepherd, yet his is the patron saint of the Church, the protector of the family: the Holy Family and the Family of God.
Not only does Jesus bless John in the traditional posture of two fingers up (for his two natures - human and divine) and three down (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), but also his left hand lovingly holds John's chin. It's a visual reminder that while John is the Forerunner and the one who made straight the path for Jesus, it was in fact Jesus who is always first - "all things came into being through him and without him not one thing came into being." John has his arms crossed, just as someone asking for a blessing at the altar rail during communion.
St Anne looms large in the back, framing this encounter reminding us that this strange scene of two toddlers blessing and being blessed is an encounter like no other. Her finger pointed up tells us that this "play date" is a meeting of heaven and earth.

morning's hymns will also be part of our Service of Advent Lessons & Carols, which is this
Sunday, December 4 at 5pm
. Please come continue your Advent preparations and support St Timothy's choirs.
The lessons and music for this year's Advent Lessons & Carols service have all been chosen to help illuminate the “Action Verbs of Advent.” The last six lessons were chosen to illustrate St. Timothy’s threefold approach to living out our faith. The second and third lessons are about Adoration; lessons four and five relate to Formation and the sixth and seventh lessons demonstrate the Transformation which God can achieve working through God’s people.

Children's Formation
This Sunday and every
Sunday, PreK children (ages 3 and potty-trained to age 5) gather downstairs during the
9am mass for a time of songs, stories, wonder, and play. Parents can drop children off as early as
8:45am in room C-4. Children join their families in mass at the passing of the Peace.
This Sunday is Parish Breakfast between the
9am and 11am mass. Join our church family and enjoy a hot breakfast in Drake Hall. We'll also be making Advent wreaths out of fresh greenery to be used at home. Bring garden clippers and fresh greenery to share--candles and everything else will be provided. Our children's choirs are singing in the
9am mass and at Lessons & Carols
this Sunday at
5pm--so join us for a wonderful
Sunday as we prepare our hearts for the mystery of Christmas!
Outreach
Our Overflow Shelter opened
Thursday night in Drake Hall. Thanks to all of you who have already volunteered time or donated supplies and helped get us ready to offer hospitality to our guests. If you haven't signed up yet, please go to
https://citywithdwellings.org/shelters/st-timothys and sign-up to be a part of this incredible outpouring of hospitality and shelter this Advent season.
Advent Wreath Workshop this Sunday, Dec.4th
Come to Parish Breakfast (
10am-11am in Drake Hall) and make an Advent Wreath to celebrate this season of preparation at home. Candles are provided or you can recycle your candles from Advents past. There will be live greenery and supplies to get you started. Please bring garden clippers and and fresh greenery clippings, (magnolia, nandina, holly, boxwood, leafy shrubs, etc.) to share.
The Angel Tree
Advent is here! As you make your own Christmas shopping lists, consider including wishes from our Angel Tree to make the holidays merry for others too. The Angel Tree will be in the downstairs hallway of the church. The first tags that are on the tree will be in support of our Overflow Shelter and New Communion Mobile Food Pantry (we are still collecting pasta too!). The second group of tags will show up after Las Posadas (
Dec.12) with the wishes from the kids of Anthony's Plot. All gifts can be returned under the tree with tags on them--the shelter gifts do not need to be wrapped, but please wrap the children's gifts. Thank you!
Las Posadas
is
Monday, Dec.12 at 5:30pm
at Anthony's Plot (2323 Sunnyside Ave). Join us in this Latin American tradition for a night of caroling and community, as we go door-to-door in the Sunnyside neighborhood in search of shelter for the Holy Family. All ages are welcome to join in--dress warmly, be ready to walk, and bring a flashlight. Parents should come with children or send them with a designated adult (just so we can keep up with everyone!). After shelter is found for Mary & Joseph, we will celebrate with a large feast complete with a visit from the Magi. This will be the fourth year that St.Tim's has joined our friends at Anthony's Plot for this meaningful part of our Advent season.
