Welcome to November and the holiday season!
October was another busy month for the 3rd District Council office. You may have noticed that we have several construction projects going on.
Hopefully, by the end of the year, the Colorado Lagoon restroom, the Marina Vista Park restroom, the Marine Stadium Judging Stand, the PeRow Greenbelt Park, and the 6th Street Bike Blvd will be complete. In addition, construction is now underway on the Leeway Sailing Center dock (Leeway Sailing Pier and Shed Structural Rebuild) and parking lot and the Granada parking lot, which will have the only electric charging stations in Belmont Shore!

In addition to these projects, my team and I were busy attending community meetings, non-profit events/programs, constituent meetings and council related committee meetings this month.
Here are my stats for the number of meetings I personally attended this month. This doesn't include the many meetings that my dedicated staff has attended on my behalf.

We hope to bring a few big items to council in November. One item deals with enhanced penalties for bike Chop-shop operations and the other is to rename Ximeno from 7th to 8th, "Bruin Way" in honor of our special community partnership with Wilson High School! Please make sure to look out for our "coming to council" email updates, which will identify the key agenda items coming to council that coming week.

3RD DISTRICT COMMUNITY MEETING - NOV 18
 Thank you to everyone who attended our October Community Meeting with Commander Erik Herzog. It was a full house at Fire Station 14 and I was so glad to see the many Third District residents who were contributing to the productive meeting. It was a morning filled with good questions, informative discussion, and thoughtful ideas. I hope everyone who attended learned as much as I did!
Our November Community Meeting will be held on
Saturday November 18 at 10am at the Third District Field Office (340 Nieto Ave). This will be our last Community Meeting for 2017 and attendees will get an update and end-of-year recap from Councilwoman Suzie Price and various Departments in the City. We will look at what we have accomplished and what we can expect in 2018. We are looking forward to kicking off the holiday season with all of our friends and neighbors in the Third District. BIXBY DOG PARK GRAND OPENING - NOV 4
 The public is invited to attend a grand opening ceremony for the new Dog Park at Bixby Park on Saturday,
November 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., at 130 Cherry Avenue.
"Bixby Dog Park will be the 11th off leash dog recreation area to open in the City of Long Beach," said Mayor Robert Garcia. "This newest park makes a total of 11 acres in the City where dogs and their owners can make friends and be active."
The dog park was developed in response to a large community outreach effort by both Councilmember Jeannine Pearce and Councilwoman Suzie Price that determined the park location and the need to create separate play areas for large and small breeds.
"Bixby Park has undergone a real transformation," said Councilmember Jeannine Pearce. "This dog park is the latest element of the Bixby Park Master plan to be completed and enhance the park's amenities for residents. The first phase of the plan included a new playground and fitness loop that opened in September 2015."
"This new dog park is a great asset that dog owners in both the 2nd and 3rd Council Districts will benefit from," said Councilmember Suzie Price. "The area further activates the park, adding to the sense of community that brings people together."
The cost for the development of the dog park was approximately $100,000, with funding coming from the 2nd and 3rd Council District one-time Infrastructure Funds as well as a third of the money coming from the Friends of Bixby Park (FOBP) organization. FOBP's long term commitment to Bixy Park has been tremendous and this project could not have happened without their partnership.
Long Beach Animal Care Services will offer a low-cost vaccine and microchip clinic, along with spay/neuter vouchers and licensing information at the event.

VETERAN'S DAY PARADE - NOV 11
 As everyone knows, parades are held for a wide range of reasons, but are usually celebrations. One of the most important local parades we can celebrate is the Veterans Day Parade, which will take place on Saturday, November 11th at 10 AM. The 21st Annual Long Beach Veterans Day Parade & Festival stages on South Street between DeForest Avenue and Elm Avenue. The parade proceeds east on South Street to Atlantic Avenue and then turns north on Atlantic Avenue and proceeds to Harding Street. The parade has a military grand marshal, a honorary grand marshal and three divisional marshals.
Closer to home, the Naples Island Garden Club will have a Veterans Day celebration at 9am on November 11 at the Colonnade Flagpole where a floral wreath will be placed in honor of our local Veterans. Join us as we pay tribute to all of our veterans for their service in the Armed Forces and as we "Honor All Who Served."

BELMONT SHORE CHRISTMAS PARADE - DEC 2
The 35th Annual Belmont Shore Christmas Parade is scheduled for December 2 at 6 PM so mark your calendars! Presented by the Belmont Shore Business Association, the theme this year is "Christmas in Paradise." Once again, Councilwoman Suzie Price will lead the parade with the CD3 Dance Party so make sure you dance, dance, dance as her float makes its way down 2nd Street! The 2017 Grand Marshal is Tony Azevedo, Five Time Olympic Medalist and Long Beach Legend. There will be over 100 entries this year and since our beautiful medians are now complete, attendees will have more space to set up their chairs, and enjoy the parade.

NAPLES CHRISTMAS PARADE - DEC 9
Naples Improvement Association gladly presents the 71st Annual Naples Island Holiday Boat Parade on
Saturday, December 9th. The theme this year is, "The Canals are Alive with the Sound of Music." The large boat parade starts at 6 PM, with the small boat parade starting at 6:30 PM. Please keep in mind that Naples' canal streets close at 5 PM. For viewing purposes, it is best to park and walk to Naples Island. Alamitos Bay Marina off 2nd Street and Marina Drive offers substantial free parking just over the Davies Bridge from Naples. Mothers Beach off Ravenna and Appian Way also has some metered parking with quick access to Naples. Marine Safety Officers will close the canals to boat access at 3:30 PM to prepare for the parade. Please keep in mind that boats must have official parade numbers to participate in the Naples Boat Parade.

MARINA VISTA BATHROOMS & TENNIS COURTS
Crews have been working hard relocating the Marina Vista Park restrooms. This project includes the installation of a new structure that is being delivered this week. Due to the improvements, there will be some temporary facility closures at Marina Vista Park.
 On
Wednesday, November 1, the parking lot at Marina Vista Park will be closed until 12 noon to allow for the loading in of the new restroom structure.
Additionally, from
Tuesday, November 7 through Thursday, November 9, the Tennis Courts at Marina Vista Park will be closed for ADA ramp installation.

TELESCOPES ANYONE?
 Historically, the City has had an operating agreement for public telescope viewers along the bluffs and in parts of Rainbow Harbor. The telescopes were coin-operated and provided great views of Long Beach's eight mile coastline. Unfortunately, over time, the viewers became outdated. The Tidelands Team, in coordination with the Parks, Recreation, and Marine Department, decided to purchase and install new telescope viewers that would provide a free amenity to anyone looking to enjoy views of our coastline. The viewers now include a second ADA accessible viewer, which will help increase access and use. The Tidelands fund has covered the cost of the viewers. We are excited to provide another wonderful amenity for our residents and visitors to the bluff.

Jennifer Nguyen-Tran - Aspiring Artist
 Jennifer Nguyen-Tran is a self-taught artist attending high school as a senior. She is capable of working and exploring with different mediums such as charcoal, watercolors, and acrylics. Being self-taught pushed her to further understand and value what has been put into the practice to best render her thoughts. Her techniques were inspired and motivated by the old works of Van Gogh and Dali and new works from Shatseva and Hieu. For motivation, Jennifer turns to music to help energize her and evoke emotion that translates to her work. The music artists that inspired many of her pieces are Alessia Cara and South Korean groups such as BTS (Beyond the Scenes). Still finding her way in the world, she relates to the lyrics of these artists whom find strength in conquering any goal, and enjoying the small things in life. She hopes to continue growing as a person and artist, while inspiring other artists just how she was inspired.
 Jennifer's art work is on display in City Hall and is available for purchase. Please contact our office if you are interested is seeing or purchasing some of her works.

BELMONT SHORE GARAGE CLEAN UP DAY - NOV 4
Attention Belmont Shore Residents! The City of Long Beach Public Works Department is having a garage clean-up day this
Saturday, November 4th from 8 AM to 12 PM. We encourage you to participate in this free program and to get rid of any unwanted "approved" items listed below. All you have to do is place your items in your back alley no later than 8 AM or drop off your items at the 54th/Claremont beach lot if you need a donation receipt. The alleys behind 2nd Street businesses will not be picked up!

THE PIE HOLE
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it seemed like time to take on a beloved American obsession. No, I'm not talking turkey, but pie! The 3rd District will soon have The Pie Hole opening up shop at 5277 E. Second Street, in the former Fromex location. Owner, Rick Anaya is working hard to get the business open in mid-November, and just in time for Thanksgiving. All pies are baked from scratch and either served by the slice or whole. They will stock sweet pies, but also savory and breakfast hand pies too. And what better to accompany a piece of pie, an array of coffee and latte beverages that I'm so excited to try.

CITY COUNCIL UPDATES
City Council Meetings are held every Tuesday evening, with the exception of the last Tuesday of the month when council is "dark." Meetings are held in City Hall - Council Chambers (333 W. Ocean Blvd.) at approximately 5pm. Times do change, so please check with our office or website for exact times. City Council meetings are open to the public and we encourage your attendance, especially if there is an important topic up for discussion.
Charter (channel 3) and FIOS Verizon (channel 21) subscribers can view the City Council Meetings on their televisions or you can live stream the video through LBTV.com,

roundabout as the contractors finish each phase. In the meantime, here is a refresher on how to drive a roundabout.

BRUIN WAY COMING TO THE STREETS OF LONG BEACH
 On November 14th Councilwoman Price will be bringing to City Council the proposal to change the name of Ximeno Ave. between 7th St. and 10th St. to Bruin Way in recognition of Wilson High School and the positive impact it has played on the community. We have seen streets be named in recognition of those with a positive impact on the city before and this would be a great way to continue this tradition. This section of street goes through a section of campus and has no residences on that part of the street.
