We are making our way into August...believe it or not! We've had amazing weather this summer and you may be wondering how you can get out on the water. Destiny Harbor Tours offers tours and charters every day of the week, as does  On Time Tours & Charters. Gig Harbor Watersports offers SUP rentals, along with Lee's SUP and Emerald Yachts. So get out and enjoy some water time! Don't forget Gig Harbor Gondola, for an extra special, romantic setting!

However you do it, find a way to keep cool this month - and be sure to join us as we wrap up Summer Sounds at Skansie and Friday Family Fun Movies in the Park. This Friday, the 28th, we will feature Little Mermaid at Skansie Brothers Park beginning at 8:30pm. Also this weekend is the annual Gig Harbor Wine & Food Festival on Saturday, the 29th. National Night Out August 1st 
 
On Tuesday, August 1st, the community of Gig Harbor is invited to come together, along Harborview Drive in downtown Gig Harbor, and join thousands of communities gathering nationwide for National Night Out. This fun, free, community-wide event from 5pm to 9pm will include free food, military and law enforcement displays, the Home Depot Root Beer Garden and many other fun activities for the whole family. Please note: Harborview Drive will be closed from Pioneer Way to Rosedale Street beginning at 4pm through 9pm.

The extremely popular and free outdoor concert series will run on consecutive Tuesdays until August 15th at the newly renovated Skansie Brothers Park, 3207 Harborview Drive. All concerts are held rain or shine. The concerts are sponsored by CHI Franciscan Health and Harbor Hill.

Continuing in August is the popular restaurant delivery service to the park by downtown eateries. Concertgoers are encouraged to ride the Gig Harbor Trolley and bring lawn chairs and blankets. Gig Harbor parks are non smoking and alcohol free parks. For best viewing, only small umbrellas are permitted, and please be respectful of your neighbors. Please note: Chairs may be moved if necessary for set up and safety, and will not be allowed on the viewing platform (roof-top level). Set up of chairs is allowed beginning at 7am each day of event.

The Gig Harbor Arts Commission is pleased to announce a Call for Artists to create a public art piece that will be permanently installed at Ancich Park, located at 3615 Harborview Drive, in downtown Gig Harbor.

On Saturday, August 12th at the Gig Harbor Public Library local mystery writer Mary Daheim will discuss her work and writing process. Daheim is the author of the "Bed-and-Breakfast" and "Emma Lord" cozy mystery series.

Galloping Gertie Half Marathon August 12th

Celebrate and explore the beauty of the region surrounding the iconic Tacoma Narrows Bridge! Accompany Lenny on the 5k, 10k, or Half Marathon course from the Tacoma Narrows airport through some of the most spectacular views the area has to offer. Enjoy these challenges and rewards knowing you're supporting some great local causes including the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital, Children's Home Society, Communities in School, and FoodBackpacks4Kids. Recipe Contest & Sponsorship Opportunity Ends Monday! 

This year as part of the annual Make a Difference Day, the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation is putting on #communityharvest. As part of this tradition to improve communities and help others, this year features a recipe contest. Through July 31st  submit an original recipe to be featured in the 2017 #Community Harvest Cookbook, which will be sold on Make a Difference Day, October 28th 2017. Additionally, these recipes will be used by sponsors and volunteers to collect ingredients for meals to be donated.

Rockin' Rhythm and Blues Festival August 12th

After 25 years in Tacoma as The Old Town Blues Festival, this widely popular event is moving to our very our Gig Harbor! The festival will take place on the grassy fields behind the Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club. In addition to great live music, there will also be food, a local vendors and a beer garden.
The proceeds of this event help support Permission to Start Dreaming, a nonprofit organization started in Gig Harbor. Permission to Start Dreaming aids soldiers arriving home with PTSD, and helps to provide both resources and awareness.

August 4th is Military Appreciation Day
 
Here in the harbor we value our Military year round, but on August 4th we want to show some extra love in honor of Military Appreciation Day.
 
This fourth Annual Military Appreciation Day will kick off at 9am at Sehmel Homestead Park. One of the highlights of the event is the friendly rivalry softball game between the military, Gig Harbor Fire, and Gig Harbor Police department and city staff. Come out and enjoy the day and show appreciation to our military.

Volunteer at the Skansie House

The City of Gig Harbor's Visitor & Interpretive Center at the Skansie House is currently recruiting volunteer ambassadors for our welcome center. The center is run in partnership with Harbor WildWatch and is home to the Harbor WildWatch Laboratory too. Volunteer shifts consist of regularly scheduled weekly, monthly or on a fill in basis.  Call for Art: 2018 Gig Harbor Garden Tour
 
The Gig Harbor Garden Tour Association invites regional (Kitsap and Pierce County, WA) artists to submit two-dimensional garden related artwork to be considered for the publicity poster for the 2018 Gig Harbor Garden Tour which will be the 21st year for the Tour. The selected artist will not receive a monetary stipend but will benefit from many facets of publicity and exposure of the Tour such as posters, cards, calendar, press releases and program tickets. The selected artist will be able to have a complimentary booth space with the 2018 Garden Tour. Deadline for submission is Friday, October 6th, 2017.

Build a Better World
 
Pierce County residents of all ages can improve their reading skills, earn prizes and have guaranteed fun this summer during Pierce County Library System's Summer Reading, June 24 through Sept. 3 at all Pierce County Libraries .

In addition to prizes, drawings, and library fine reductions for readers of all ages, the library branches will host nine local authors, a teen writing incentive, and a variety of seminars and demonstrations geared towards various ages.

Harbor Institute Provides Learning Opportunities

Tacoma Community College Gig Harbor Campus presents Harbor Institute, a non-credit program for adults who want the fun and challenge of a college class without the papers, tests, and grades. With affordable prices, Harbor Institute makes it easy to learn local history, immerse yourself in art, or keep up on some of the most exciting and important trends unfolding in the world at large.

As always Wednesday through Sunday stop by the Skansie House Visitor and Interpretive Center to check out interactive exhibits like a touch tank, augmented reality sandbox and live feed of the Bay. 

On Science Saturdays during the month of August, learn how scientists gather and study plankton. Plankton tows will occur at noon and 1pm with observations under the microscope following.

Olympic Drive overpass had re-stripping and traffic signal modifications completed in July. Please drive carefully through this area and be aware of the change in traffic flow.

A new right turn lane will be constructed beginning July 10th. The majority of this work will take place at night and completion should be in September.
