AND, BREATHE...

As much as I love summer, September brings a return to normalcy and a structure I need. And I must admit, I love Fall clothes! This month we have the Harvest Stompede , Earthwork Harvest Gathering , the Downtown TC Art Walk , the Leelanau Harvest Tour , the return of football and my personal favorite, the US OPEN! Enjoy!

SEPTEMBER 2016

Organic Bean & Corn Salsa

One of my favorites as I add beans and corn to almost everything I make. This salsa packs a spicy punch.  Of course you can pair this with chips, but the layer of flavors may inspire you to try something new.

Black Bean & Corn Salsa Chili

As you may or may not know, I am not a cook. I don't like to do it, and I'm not good at it. Luckily, I'm married to someone who loves to cook and is an excellent chef! But I can do a few dishes, one of them being a Black Bean and Corn Salsa Chili! It's the easiest recipe and it tastes divine. It's also great as the kids go back to school and schedules are hectic.

Ingredients

2 jars
FFT Organic Black Bean and Corn Salsa
2 cans red beans (I use Eden Organic)
1 can diced or crushed tomatoes (Muir Glen)
2 cups frozen corn (I like the organic brand they use at Oryana)
1 cup diced onions
1/2 tsp of cumin
1/2 tsp of garlic, granulated
salt & pepper to taste
a few drops of hot sauce (Clancy's Fancy is our favorite right now)
ground meat of some sort (optional)

Open jars and dump everything into the pot! If you are using meat, I brown it with onions and garlic first in the same pot you will be using.
Simmer on low heat for an hour or so, and add liquid if it gets too thick.
Eat and enjoy!

September 17 is a notable day. First, it's the day our son was born (in 2004.) It was also the day in 1967 that this band performed for the first and only time on the Ed Sullivan Show. What band was it?

History Buff

In addition to pop culture and tennis, I ardently love history. When I go back to school, it will be my focus. For now, we have historybuff.com. Best described as "Buzzfeed meets Smithsonian", this site is the future of history. You can also contribute, as it combines professional writers and contributors side-by-side.
Here is a link to the Great War You Tube Channel which chronicles WWI history week by week. Enjoy!

PepeNero

Giorgio and Monica Lo Greco's fantastic restaurant at the Commons is on the move...next door. Opening around September 6 in the Kirkbride Building, this delightful eatery should be on your radar. In addition, they are opening Ballaro Wine Lounge, featuring Italian tapas and a fabulous selection of wines. Check out both places here and tell them that Kathy Young sent you!

ARTICLE TITLE
Peaky Blinders

One of Timothy's favorites! A gangster family epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England and centered on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby, who means to move up in the world. Cillian Murphy is superb, as is the supporting cast.

Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix

Reverse Direction for Ceiling Fans

If you have a ceiling fan, reverse the direction ... the fan should be run in a clockwise direction (stand under the fan and if you feel a breeze, reverse the direction so that air is being drawn upwards). This pushes the air up against the ceiling and down the walls, to gently re-circulate the warm air without creating a cooling "wind chill effect."

SING FOR YOUR LIFE: A Story of Race, Music and Family

I just finished this book and it was an amazing true tale. Daniel Bergner's story of Ryan Speedo Green is heartbreaking and inspiring, in one complete story.
He had a tough upbringing in southeastern Virginia: his family lived in a trailer park and later a bullet-riddled house across the street from drug dealers. His father was absent; his mother was volatile and abusive.

At the age of twelve, Ryan was sent to Virginia's juvenile facility of last resort. He was placed in solitary confinement. He was uncontrollable, uncontainable, with little hope for the future.

In 2011, at the age of twenty-four, Ryan won a nationwide competition hosted by New York's Metropolitan Opera, beating out 1,200 other talented singers. Today, he is a rising star performing major roles at the Met and Europe's most prestigious opera houses.

The National Writers Series presents Daniel Bergner in December at the City Opera House in Traverse City, with Ryan Speedo Green live via Skype. More information on that as it gets closer. For now, read this book and be a part of the conversation.

This book will be released September 27.

Horizon Books , Brilliant Books , the Cottage Book Store or your local book seller can get this book for you!

"The foliage has been losing its freshness through the month of August, and here and there a yellow leaf
shows itself like the first gray hair amidst the locks of a beauty who has seen one season too many."

~ Oliver Wendell Holmes
