December 9, 2016
Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to our new weekly bulletin. We are excited to provide this new format. There are a few added features; however, we want to ensure that you continue to receive all the critical information you have enjoyed the past few years. With that in mind, if there is something missing or that you would like to see added, please let us know. We'll see what we can do.

It's hard to believe that we are half way through the 2nd marking period. Please check your child's Home Access Center this coming Friday to their progress reports.

Tonight is the 8th grade winter formal and the buzz around school is what everyone is wearing. Tonight is a highlight for the 8th graders and is a perfect way to ring in the holiday season. If your child will be attending, please note that the dance ends at 9 PM and they should be picked at that time.
Next week begins a new club. The Northley ROBOTICS club will have its first meeting this coming Tuesday after school. If your child is interested in Robotics, please encourage them to attend the meeting.

Finally, please take note of the links below to access your child's homework. The staff is working to provide you and your child up to date information on assignments that is easily accessed from one location. Take advantage of this resource and contact the team leaders if you have any questions.
With the drop in temps, don't forget to cut the water to your exterior water faucets. My neighbor learned the hard way.

Have a great weekend,

We hope you will take this opportunity to compete academically both locally and on a national level.
  •  eCYBERMISSION STEM competition, teams must be registered by December 7, 2016 review details here
  • StoryCorp The Great Listen - last month high school students throughout the country participated in this activity. This holiday season you can do so as well on your own by downloading the StoryCorps App to your phone and interviewing your elders. (Save your archives until you are older and can submit!) Interview one of your elders and help create a priceless piece of personal history following the steps through the link for StoryCorps. All published StoryCorps interviews are saved in the Library of Congress. (Put that on your resume!)
  • Generation Beyond - due December 15, 2016. Individuals and teams of up to four middle school students are invited to submit a one-to-two-minute video, which must include a visual representation of their design, of how they would design a habitational module to carry the first crew to Mars! • Cassini Scientist for a Day Contest - due February 24, 2017. The Cassini Scientist for a Day contest challenges students to become NASA scientists studying Saturn. Participants examine three possible observations taken by Cassini and are tasked to choose the one they think will yield the best scientific results. This choice must then be supported  in essay.
  •  Bright Schools Competition - due February 6, 2017. The program is to create a learning experience that will help students, parents and teachers better understand the link between light, sleep and student health and performance. Through the competition, students in grades 6-8 select a topic related to light and sleep and select one of three exploration options (developing a prototype, creating an awareness campaign or writing a research proposal) to create an original project.
Attendance Procedure for Family Education Trips:

Please note that family educational trips requests are required to be sent to the main office at least one week prior to the student's absence for approval by the Principal.  Family educational trips WILL NOT BE APPROVED during the PSSA testing window. Once given administrative approval, a "Trip Note" will be issued from the principal.  The student must have all teachers sign indicating that they are aware of the planned educational trip and the "Trip Note" must be returned to the office for use as an absence note.  A maximum of 5 days of absence will be excused as a result of this process. Any additional absences associated with the trip will be unexcused.  The student is responsible for all work missed during the trip. Information on District policy #204  can be found in the Northley Student/Parent Handbook page 36.  Student Handbook or on the district website.
