From the President
This month's newsletter is filled with several interesting articles of importance that you will want to take note of. I've mentioned in the past the ongoing challenge to the legality of the ministerial "housing allowance." The most recent ruling by the Court allows the case to move forward and likely could result in the permanent loss of this important benefit to ministers. Protecting religious liberty in the U.S. from the onslaught of secular humanism continues to be an ongoing battle. You will want to learn more about what our Attorney General is doing to ensure that the rights of all people of faith are not being trampled. With the end of the year in sight, you will want to look at a recent publication put out by Network for Good that highlights some of the current trends and preferences of donors.

We've also made note of several interesting webinars on employment related topics that you might want to check in to. These are not CMA sponsored events, (though one of the two is sponsored by ADP, a long-time friend of the ministry), both look like they might be very useful.

As always, we can be of any assistance to you on anything to do with the "business" of ministry, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Yours in His Service,
Steve Boersma

Wisconsin Federal District Court Rules Minister's Housing Allowance Unconstitutional
This decision does not come as a surprise as the same judge issued a similar ruling back in 2013, though the case was later dismissed by a higher appeals court on the technical grounds of standing. In the current situation the plaintiff bringing the case (Freedom from Religion Foundation [FFRF]) has tried adjusting its approach to overcome the standing hurdle. (read more )
New Guidance from the Department of Justice on Protecting Religious Liberty in the USA

In a pair of memos initiated by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Department of Justice (DOJ) recently issued extensive new guidance on protecting religious liberty in the United States.

The first memo directed to all federal executive departments and agencies lays out 20 guiding principles which these administrative agencies and executive departments will now be expected to use in carrying out their duties. The second memo specifically written to his department (DOJ) discusses how this guidance should be implemented. (read more)

Employee Recognition
...five suggestions for getting it right

Keeping employees plugged into their jobs and coming into work with good attitudes is something all good managers work hard at. One of the best ways to help accomplish this is through meaningful recognition.

In much the same way that having a well-organized, safe workplace serves as the backbone for quality and efficiency of work performed, so the recognition of employees serves as the lifeblood of the organization.

But going about this can be tricky and can be fraught with claims of "favoritism," unfairness, and displeasure if employees feel their manager is handing out the recognition subjectively. (read more)
