November is National Family Caregivers Month - a time to celebrate, thank and support the 90 million family caregivers across the nation. We'd like to say a big thank you to our REST Trainers and REST Companions who honor caregivers every day!  

We have another reason to celebrate:  We have expanded REST into four more states, bringing the total to 25 states now using the REST training program!
 
Nevada
A total of 19 new REST Trainers completed two REST courses on Oct. 12-13, in Las Vegas, and on Oct. 19-20, in Reno, through the Nevada Aging and Disability Services Division. Click here to see photos.
 
Since August, REST Trainers from the state have conducted a total of five REST Companion courses, training nearly 100 individuals to provide respite care for caregivers.
 
New York
A total of 20 individuals completed two REST training events:  Oct. 6-7 in Canadaigua, and on Oct. 12-13  in Buffalo, through the New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition.
 
The New York State Caregiving & Respite Coalition Annual Conference will take place Nov. 9,  at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center, Albany.  See details.

REST Trainers from the New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition have awarded a $4,333 state grant to the Caregiver Resource Center , allowing the organization to add eight new volunteer respite providers who can provide breaks for an additional 30 caregivers over the age 60 in Clinton County. Arkansas
The Arkansas Lifespan Respite Coalition presented the REST Essentials course during the 2016 Arkansas Lifespan Respite Summit on Oct. 21, at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church in Little Rock .  Find out more about the event.
A REST Companion course will take place on Nov. 4,  at Oaklawn Center on Aging , Hot Springs.  Additional information here

The  Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has scheduled a National Family Caregiver Month celebration for Nov. 9. The day includes a tour of the UAMS Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Center and Carehouse, and the opportunity to hear national speakers, like John Schall, president and CEO of Caregiver Action Network. Illinois
The Chicago Daily Herald highlighted the new REST Essentials e-course in a recent three-part series report, "Caregivers Crisis." Click here to read the article.

Calvary Lutheran Church, Wood Dale , will have a Thanksgiving respite event on Nov. 12, and a Christmas event on Dec. 10.  Learn more about these two events.

Respite Endowment Organization in Lisle, and the Alive Center in Naperville are collaborating to offer a new monthly drop-off respite program for parents of children with special needs, using the REST Essentials curriculum to train volunteers. Read more here.

Minnesota
Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), St. Paul , will host a large REST Train-the-Trainer event on Nov. 3-4. As the largest state agency, DHS helps ensure that Minnesota seniors, people with disabilities, children and others meet their basic needs and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Michigan
Fourteen new REST Trainers completed a REST training course, which took place on Oct. 25-26,  at the Area Agency on Aging 1-B , Southfield.  Read testimonials from those who attended this training event.  
Maine
A staff member of  Spectrum Generations, Augusta, recently completed the REST training course. The organization is one of the five Maine Area Agencies on Aging serving seven counties in the central and mid-coast Maine area. The mission of Spectrum Generations:  to provide life-long learning, health, wellness, nutrition, community engagement and the social well-being of all older and disabled adults in our communities.
Arizona
An employee from the Area Agency on Aging Region Four, Yuma, recently completed the REST course. The agency provides home and community based services, advocates for older adults and offers information on programs, options and community supports. Those supports include: utility payment assistance, health insurance assistance, the Family Caregiver Support Program, and Arizona Respite Locator.

Washington D.C.
We have a new trainer from Kadamba Tree Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports family caregivers through classes and workshops, one-to-one guidance, and customized stress management programs. 
Nebraska
REST Trainer Suzy Campbell recently received AARP Nebraska's highest volunteer award : the Andrus Award for Community Service, presented annually since 2002. Read more about Campbell, and how she has made a difference.

Alabama
In honor of National Family Caregiving Month , the Alabama Lifespan Respite Resource Network will have a Caregiver Appreciation Event , Nov. 18, at Brookdale Jones Farm in Huntsville.  The day will include door prizes, manicures, lunch, Bingo and more.  Read more about this free event here.
Tennessee
The Tennessee Respite Coalition will have a Caregiver Appreciation Brunch and discussion about respite and caregiver services on Nov. 9, at the Dickson Senior Citizen Center, Dickson, and a Caregiver Appreciation Day on Nov. 14, at The Temple Church in Nashville. Missouri
One of our trainers in Kansas City has begun to use the REST curriculum in training personal support workers, as well as adult day providers this fall through the  Carousel Adult Day Center.

Hawaii
Nā Hoaloha will hold a fundraiser on Nov. 6, aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America . Proceeds from the event, which includes a three-course luncheon, silent auction and entertainment, will help keep seniors in their homes with the support of Nā Hoaloha's volunteers. Montana
Montana Governor Steve Bullock recently announced plans to expand support for Montana seniors and their caregivers. Among the proposals:  providing additional funding to Area Agencies on Aging for services that help seniors stay in their homes and communities, including respite care for caregivers, home delivered meals and transportation to doctor appointments.
