As the Thanksgiving holiday nears, we are reminded of the many reasons we have to be thankful. At Liberty, we are continually grateful for our members, who not only bring smiles to our faces each day, but have allowed us the opportunity to celebrate our 44th year in business. With members like you, we have been able to provide an environment that fosters health and wellness throughout our local community. Please know that you are always appreciated and we thank you for allowing us to serve you.

We wish you and your families a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday.

Vitamin D; the sunshine vitamin
Susan Cutshaw, M.S. Nutritionist

Summer is over and for Michiganders maintaining adequate vitamin D levels may be problematic.  People who live north of 40 degrees latitude may develop a winter-time vitamin D deficiency when compared to their southern counterparts. (Deficiencies may occur in sunny climates as well.)  Consuming foods that contain vitamin D may not be enough for maintaining serum blood levels during the winter months.

Vitamin D is considered one of the four fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K), although it's technically a steroid hormone. Adequate levels of VD3 or 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 are determined through a blood test.

Vitamin D is necessary for maintaining optimal bone health by regulating calcium and phosphorus levels.  Research suggests low levels of Vitamin D may also be linked to increased risk for certain cancers, depression, muscular dystrophy, type I diabetes, and muscle and bone pain.

Recommendations
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Endocrine Society provide guidelines for serum blood levels of vitamin D.

Adequate
Over 20 ng/mL
30-60 ng/mL
Excessive
Over 60 ng/mL

*ng/mL is nanograms per milliliter

These two groups have also set upper limits of vitamin D dosage per day for different age groups.

9 to 18 years
19+ years

Food sources
3.5 oz salmon, fresh (wild) has 600 to 1,000 IU/vitamin D
3.5 oz salmon, fresh (farmed) has 100 to 250 IU/vitamin D
3.5 oz salmon, canned has 300 to 600 IU/vitamin D
3.5 oz tuna, canned has 236 IU/vitamin D
3.5 oz shiitake mushrooms (fresh) has about 100 IU/vitamin D
3.5 oz shiitake mushrooms (sun-dried) has about 1,600 IU/vitamin D
1 egg yolk has about 20 IU/vitamin D
8 oz fortified milk or yogurt has 100 IU/vitamin D
8 oz fortified orange juice has about 100 IU/vitamin D

Supplements
Before purchasing a vitamin D supplement, consult with your health care provider to ensure the correct dosage and timing.

Studies have shown that vitamin D3 is the best choice for supplements and should be taken with meals containing fat  to properly facilitate absorption.  Supplements can be taken daily, weekly, or monthly.  The choice depends on whether the supplements are correcting a deficiency or maintaining adequate levels (determined by a health care provider).

Supplements are not regulated by the FDA, but there are three groups that monitor ingredients. Look for these symbols when purchasing supplements.
