REST Around the Nation 
highlights the latest developments taking place nationwide to create a trained respite workforce.

Nevada
Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), in conjunction with the Nevada Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD),  hosted a REST Train-the-Trainer event May 10-11 at the University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension in Carson City. The event took place  with the goal of expanding volunteer respite services in Northern rural Nevada. Nine new trainers from Nevada, and two from Montana completed the two-day course. REST now has trainers in 20 states!

Already this May, 22 REST Companions were trained through this collaboration. Another training is planned for July 11 in Caliente. Find out how seniors are serving through the RSVP

New York
REST Trainers from New York will hold two upcoming REST Companion courses in early June in  Genesco and Rochester. These same trainers will return to Chicago to attend a REST Master Trainer course later this month. Learn more about requirements to become a REST Master Trainer
 
New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition (NYSCRC) plans to announce Request for Proposals to distribute mini grants focused on Volunteer Program development and expansion by the end of 2016. NYSCRC will be seeking applicants who will partner with the Coalition to identify volunteer respite models to be started or expanded in their designated region.  These programs will include a REST-specific training component.  For more information about NYSCRC
 
Kansas
The Area Agency on Aging will hold a REST Companion training on June 8 in Concordia, and June 16 in Junction City. For more details

Two REST trainers partnered to hold a REST Companion training course on May 13 in Hays. Eleven new REST Companions completed the course, which was sponsored by the Fort Hays State University Senior Companion Program, and the Northwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging.  

Trinity Heights Respite Care provides breaks for parents of children with special needs. The nonprofit organization serves families in Harvey and Marion Counties. 

Arkansas
The Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program , Little Rock, hosted its annual REST Companion training on May 4. Participants included hospice volunteers from Saline County, health care professionals, medical social workers, and other lay persons. Read more here

Over the past few months, 43 new REST Companions were trained. Thanks to the dedication and passion of REST trainers, the network of support for caregivers continues to grow in Arkansas!
 
Nebraska
Congratulations to Peg Jensen - our REST Trainer of the Quarter. Along with serving as a program coordinator at the Central Nebraska Community Services, Peg is an active trainer who continues to promote her REST Companion courses through social media, a newsletter and other ways throughout her community.  Peg has two trainings scheduled in June, and she looks forward to offering more REST trainings in her service area in the months to come. Illinois
Eleven new REST Companions completed their training this spring in Naperville . The events were funded by the City of Naperville Social Services Grant, and sponsored by Metropolitan Family Services In-Home Senior Respite Program, and the Respite Endowment Organization.  Learn more about Metropolitan Family Services here

Tennessee
Trainers from the Tennessee Respite Coalition (TRC) and The Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability will partner to host a REST training this June for Senior Companions. Learn more about the TRC here
 
Massachusetts
An editorial in the Cape Cod Times advocated for a raise in the reimbursement rate for adult day care, reporting the state reimbursement rate hasn't kept up with costs and has led to the closing of 10 centers. The piece concluded: "The care of our seniors and reimbursement for adult day care should be a priority for those at the State House, the state Department of Public Health, and each one of us." Hawaii
A REST Train-the-Trainer event will take place July 27-28 in Maui .  The event is sponsored by Nā Hoaloha -"loving friend" - a community-based volunteer organization that serves the aging population in Maui County.  Nā Hoaloha provides support to seniors and persons with disabilities to enable them to live independently and enhance their quality of life. Its programs include an In-home Respite Program, which allows a family caregiver the opportunity for relief. Read more here
 
Iowa
REST was honored to present information on its training program during the Iowa Respite Coalition meeting last month. To learn more about respite in Iowa

The Governor's Conference on Aging and Disabilities  took place May 23-26 in Des Moines, and was sponsored by the Iowa Department on Aging, and the Iowa Developmental Disability Council.  Learn more here
