NASA calling: Mobile businesses hear about opportunities
Mobile's business community got a loud and clear message Thursday from deep space - or at least from Huntsville, which is the next best thing when it comes to getting a shot at NASA contracts.
Dozens of interested business representatives gathered at a NASA Business Forum that offered a chance to hear from some people deeply involved in the business of space. These included officials from the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, the Stennis Space Center and NASA Shared Services in coastal Mississippi, as well as representatives from Boeing and other prime contractors involved in development of the heavy-lift Space Launch System that will be a key part of exploration missions to the Moon, Mars and possibly beyond.
Those speakers had an appealing message to get across: NASA is committed to handing out hundreds of millions of dollars to small businesses every year, either through direct contracts or to subcontractors working for "the primes.

Local leaders join to promote business growth and job creation in Tuscaloosa

Local government and university officials and representatives from regional economic and industrial development agencies announced a formal partnership on Wednesday to better coordinate efforts to promote business growth and job creation.
"Our vision is to have a thriving economy with great jobs and opportunities for the people who live here," said Claude Edwards, board chairman for the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority. "We want Tuscaloosa and all of West Alabama to remain a leader in workforce development, and we believe that will happen when we are all aligned and know how to recognize and react to changing forces in our economy."
Edwards and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, Northport, Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, the University of Alabama, the UA System Office, Tuscaloosa County Development Authority, Shelton State Community College, Stillman College and Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports Commission signed a memorandum of agreement during the Chamber of Commerce's State of the Economy breakfast at the Hotel Capstone on Wednesday.

AMEA joins T-100 supporters

The Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA) Board of Directors has approved a Resolution of Support for the Leonardo-DRS Trainer Aircraft project in Tuskegee, a project that could potentially create 750 new jobs for Macon County and the region.
Leonardo-DRS is a world-wide manufacturer of trainer jet aircraft and has selected and signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the state of Alabama and the Macon County Economic Development Authority to locate a production site at historic Moton Field in Tuskegee, should the manufacturer win the contract to build its 21st century T-100 trainer jet for the Air Force.
The T-100 is currently being used by the United States' allies, including Israel, Poland, Italy, United Arab Emirates and Singapore.
