Season's greetings to those in the world who celebrate 25 December and the New Year. (I take into account that a very significant part of the world has other celebrations of equal importance on other dates, so please know that I may offer my best wishes on behalf of GHI again during other holiday seasons!).

As you know, GHI has had a successful year, with the relaunch of our website, the publication of our second book, and the growth of our Ambassador Programme. In 2017, we plan to unveil many new activities, initiatives and materials, including the development of a several new GHI Working Groups. We look forward to having many opportunities to work with all of our members as we advocate for science-based food safety law and trade.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have suggestions or ideas that would help GHI to achieve its goals.

Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season,

Huub Lelieveld
 President, GHI

EFSA Guidelines on Novel and Traditional Foods Finalized

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published two guidance documents on novel food and traditional food from developing countries to help ensure that these foods are safe before risk managers decide whether they can be marketed in Europe.

EFSA developed the guidance following the adoption of the new European regulation on novel food in November 2015. The regulation, which comes into effect in January 2018, introduces a centralized assessment and authorization procedure. EU risk managers will decide on the market authorization of novel foods and may ask EFSA to conduct a scientific risk assessment to confirm their safety. Traditional foods are considered a subset of novel foods.

In light of GHI's book on traditional and ethnic foods, members may be interested in the guidance documents because they contain information of interest to those wishing to harmonize food safety regulations.

Visit EFSA's news release page to read more and for links to the documents.

Based on the principles of GHI, Ensuring Global Food Safety: Exploring Global Harmonization offers a rational and multi-faceted approach to current food safety issues, while arguing that a science-based global regulatory framework will enhance the safety, availability and quality of the food supply worldwide.

GHI was specifically established to help build global consensus on the scientific evidence underpinning food safety policymaking. This book provides practical examples in key areas such as microbiology, toxicology and nutrition, as well as discusses possible improvements necessary to sustain the integrity of the global food supply in the 21st century.
