37th Annual Holiday Boutique 
Friday, November 3, 2017 | 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Municipal Services Building, 33 Arroyo Drive
The 37th Annual Holiday Boutique sponsored by South San Francisco Senior Services will be held on Friday, November 3, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Municipal Services Building, 33 Arroyo Drive in South San Francisco.
 
This event features hand crafted as well as commercially produced items for sale. This includes unique jewelry, hand painted items, candles & soaps, greeting cards, fragrances and snack booth.  There is much more. Admission is free.

Veteran's Day 2017
Free Lap & Rec Swimming for Vets at Orange Pool
on November 11 & 12

On Saturday, November 11th and Sunday November 12th, the Orange Memorial Park Pool will have free entry to the pool for military veterans in recognition of Veteran's Day. 44th Annual Thanksgiving Fun Run Saturday, November 18, 2017 

The 44th Annual Thanksgiving Fun Run hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department will be held on Saturday, November 18. The run start time will begin at 9:00 a.m. at 340 Point San Bruno Blvd, South San Francisco. Pre-Registration will begin on Monday, Oct 2nd and end on Monday, November 6th. 

Pre-registration cost per person: $20.00
Race Day Registration: $30.00 (come early!)
13 years old- 17 years old : $5.00
12 years and under: Free (registration form required)

Santa Comes to Town!
Saturday, December 2nd | 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
City Hall at 400 Grand Ave, South San Francisco 

Rain or shine, Santa will be at City Hall  to visit South San Francisco on Saturday, December 2 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  Bring a camera to get a picture with Santa. This event is co-sponsored by the City of South San Francisco and Chamber of Commerce. For more information, please call (650) 588-1911.
 
Improving Public Places Fundraiser
Wreath Making Workshop
Sunday, December 3 | 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

What better way to get in the holiday spirit than creating your own beautiful wreath. The Improving Public Places group will host two wreath making sessions on Sunday, December 3: one family-friendly session from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and one adult-only session in the afternoon from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. All greens are sustainably harvested from South San Francisco parks. Workshop leaders will provide all the basic materials needed, including optional accessories for your wreath, along with hands-on instruction. The workshop fee, including all materials, is $25.00. SSF Parks and Recreation's Civic Ballet Presents
The Nutcracker
Saturday, December 16 | 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, December 17 | 1:00 p.m.
The Parks and Recreation Department's Civic Ballet will be offering three showings of the annual Nutcracker production.  This year, the performances will be held at South San Francisco High School's theater on  Saturday, December 16 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 17 at 1:00 p.m.  Tickets cost $6.00 for youth and $8.00 for adults (18 years and older), and will be available for purchase in the Recreation Office beginning Monday, November 27.  Please contact the Recreation Office for further details (650) 829-3800.    
 
Winter Class Registration

Winter session activity guides are scheduled to be mailed out in mid-November.  In addition to classes and special events, the winter activity guide will also feature the Parks and Recreation Department's year in review.  Resident registration will begin online at 6:00am on Monday, December 4.  Non-resident registration will begin online at 6:00am on Monday, December 18.  Please note that touchtone phone registration will no longer be available.  Make sure to prepare ahead of time and contact the Recreation Office if you are in need of your Client ID and Family Pin numbers by calling (650) 829-3800.

Tuesday, November 21, 2017, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. -- Volunteer duties include helping to distribute bagged food to families, i.e. families will arrive with a letter that includes their ID number. They will hand the letter to the YMCA representative, who will check them in and ask a volunteer to help retrieve the bag for the family. Location: 200 Linden Ave., SSF


Holiday Toy & Food Drive on December 20 and 21, 2017

Wednesday, December 20, 2017, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. -- Volunteer duties include sorting of fresh produce and packing produce into bags for families; each bag is labeled with an ID number assigned to a family

Wednesday, December 20, 2017, 3 p.m. until finished -- Volunteer duties include sorting toys per age range and packing them in bags for families; once bags are packed, they will be transported to the 200 Linden Ave. location. Location: Fire Station No. 61, 480 N. Canal St., SSF

Thursday, December 21, 2017, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. -- Volunteer duties include helping to distribute bagged food and toys to families, i.e. families will arrive with a letter that includes their ID number. Fall Drop-In Classes
Stay busy and active this Fall with a variety of drop-in classes from Pickleball to Zumba. No pre-registration is necessary.  Please note all drop-in fees are cash only and exact change is suggested.  If you have questions or need more information on the drop-in programs, please contact the Recreation Office at (650) 829-3800. 
 
Parks 11 Improvement Program: Update
The City of South San Francisco Breaks Ground on the Alta Loma Park Renovation

Construction at  Alta Loma Park Playground began on Monday, October 16, 2017, and will be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting. Improvements include new play equipment (examples shown below), rubberized playground surfacing, fencing and other site improvements.   The new features of the Alta Loma Park include:
  • Spintastic
  • Spin Cup
  • Rhino-Dyno
  • Cozy Cacoon
  • T-Swing with Tot Seats
  • Wave Rider See Saw
  • Beehive
  • Rubberized Safety Surfacing, which is funded separately through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.

Save the date for the February 2018 Photography Exhibit 
Entry Guidelines Available November 10th
 
Mark your calendars for the first 2018 art gallery exhibit, a Photography Exhibit. Entry guidelines and applications will be available Friday, November 10, and may be downloaded by visiting the Current Opportunities for Artists webpage at www.ssf.net. Applications can also be obtained during business hours at the South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department office at 33 Arroyo Drive.

The exhibit will take place on Friday and Saturday, February 9 and 10, 2018, at the South San Francisco Municipal Services Building. Exhibit hours are Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will be open to the public, and admission free. Sweetest Lemonade : Inspirational Speaker, Jason Pablo
Thursday, November 2nd, 6:00 p.m. - SSF Main Library
Jason Pablo is the host of the podcast show, Living Proof, and a featured speaker for the web series, Faith Speaks. Jason was this year's keynote speaker at Stanford Hospital's Heart Transplant Conference.
 
Do you need a dose of inspiration and encouragement to uplift your spirit? Find out how a man who flat lined five times, received a heart transplant, a kidney transplant, a hip replacement still enjoys the many things life has to offer. Jason will provide a 15 minute inspirational talk on how his experiences helped change the way he views and responds to life's challenges. He will be available to answer questions after his talk.
 
This program is in partnership with the South San Francisco Asian Alliance. Light refreshments will be provided. 

Asian Art Museum presents: Couture Korea
Saturday, November 4th, 2:00 p.m. - SSF Main Library
A docent from the Asian Art Museum's Community Speaker Program, will deliver an educational and entertaining multimedia talk on Korean fashion as an expression of social and cultural values . Couture Korea showcases historical Korean fashion and its modern reinterpretations at a moment when young Seoul-based designers are making the leap to the global stage and international haute couture is finding inspiration in Korean art and culture. With more than 120 works, the exhibition considers fashion as an enduring expression of social and cultural values.
 
Financial Fitness: Retirement & Wealth Preservation w/ Brad Hamada
The concepts behind retirement, health care and estate planning are often difficult to understand but are mounting concerns for individuals reaching retirement age. Learn the concepts behind retirement savings vehicles, how health care supports people in retirement and participate in an eye opening discussion on estate planning and how it can affect generations of a person's family.
Every Sunday in November, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. - SSF Main Library
Founded in 1999, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel. NaNoWriMo believes in the transformational power of creativity. We provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds-on and off the page.
 
This is our fourth year hosting write-ins! We will provide the coffee, cookies, writing references, expert librarians on hand, and other writers--you supply the creativity.

Grand Ave. Library at 306 Walnut Ave, South San Francisco. 
Learn computer programming with Google Code Corps .  We will explore different themes including sports, fashion, art, social media, and music.  While learning computer science in a fun and social environment.  
 
Google Code Corps is a collaborative partnership between Americorps VISTA, Google, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.  Our goal is to enable children to be successful through a computer science education.
