Help the Mission Team Work in Kenya
On January 4, ten people from Oregon-Idaho will leave
for Kenya. While we are there, we will work with the Maua
Methodist Hospital and several schools. Some of what we will do there will depends on raising enough money for the projects: a house for an orphan family, a new classroom, medical and deworming clinics. In addition to bringing money for the projects and non-expert labor on some of them, we go to build relationships and to show people there that we care enough to go and meet them. We will listen to stories, celebrate the completion of projects, and share together the love of God.
You can help! Please pray for our preparation and fundraising. If you would like a copy of the list of requested donations or a brochure with more information about the team and the country, there are copies in the church hallway. If you
would like to donate money, the best way is to write a check made out to Hermiston UMC and give it to me. We must have all the donations, including money, by mid-Dec.
Thanks for your interest and help in reaching out to brothers and sisters on the other side of the world.

Holiday Craft Fair, 2017
The UMW Holiday Craft Fair is coming up soon, on Friday and Saturday, November
3rd - 4th, 2017. We will have many holiday vendors with a huge variety of crafts. We will also be serving lunch for fair attendees on both days. In addition, UMW will have tables for our own handicrafts, our bake sale, and our jewelry sale at this year's Craft Fair.
Our UMW group will be looking for many volunteers to help make the fair a success. We will need helpers in the kitchen to serve lunch, and helpers to sit at our tables during the sale. We are asking for donations of handcrafted items for our UMW table - dishcloths, dish towels, ornaments, art work, etc. Any handcrafted items you would like to make for us to sell would be welcomed.
We are also asking for church members to please donate baked items to our bake sale table. Cookies, candy, biscuits, muffins, scones - you name it, someone will buy it and love it! The bake sale has been VERY popular. All profits from the baked goods and crafts go to the kitchen remodel project.
Please mark your calendar now for November 3rd and 4th. Watch for the sign-up sheets for volunteer shifts on the bulletin board in the hall. Listen for the upcoming announcements, and be thinking about what you would like to bake for the bake sale.

Advent Labyrinth Walk
We will begin our Advent Labyrinth Journey in the sanctuary at 6:00 pm for worship and song. The labyrinth in Herrmann Hall will have a very special layout this year to mark a beginning of the journey through the Advent Season.

Morningside members and their friends served 75 people chili with cornbread, chicken noodle soup, grilled cheese, and desserts. Helping and or supplying food were Antoinette Lawson, Kelly and Deb Freels, Fred and Sharon Cooper, Rick Neff, Susan Priest, Cindy and Bill Burgess, Jan Nelson, Michael Powell, friend Marie Cramer, and Willamette University student Tessa.
The next time we get a chance to serve is December 31, 2017.

THINK BEFORE YOU INK
Your signature is valuable. Before signing an initiative or a referendum petition, think before you ink.
Is it TOO COMPLEX?
Some decisions may be simple yes or no votes. Other decisions will affect many areas of government. Make sure you understand the implications and consequences if this petition becomes law.
Is it CLEAR?
Some proposals aren't well-written. They may have conflicts requiring court interpretations or resolutions.
Does it BELONG in the Constitution?
Is it a fundamental law that should be protected? Changes or mistakes would require another (costly) election to amend the Oregon Constitution.
Is it an "unfunded mandate"?
Would the Legislature need to pull funds from other essential programs? Initiatives should generally not earmark, restrict, or obligate specific General Fund revenue percentages.
Before you sign, ask to see ID.
Paid gatherers must carry photo ID issued by the Secretary of State. State law requires them to show ID to certain officials, but not to voters. If they don't, voters can reasonably wonder why. Numerous instances of fraud could have been avoided by insisting on seeing ID. If fraud is found, your information could help.
YOUR SIGNATURE IS VALUABLE
Similar to primary versus general election votes, your vote has proportionately more impact on petitions. Never sign a petition "just to get it on the ballot so people can vote on it."

On November 11 we have been invited to help serve a Thanksgiving Community Feast. Volunteers are needed for 2 hour shifts 9-3:30.
Please let me know ASAP which shift you would like to do. The event will take place at Salem First UMC.

Parent's Night Out 
This past month we had over 15 children attend and plenty of volunteers, thank you to all who came and played with our children and led an activity. A special thanks to our lead volunteer of the month Carlee Hunt who ensured we had a successful night and Shawn Clark whom donated our food.

Memorial Service
A memorial service for Dick Riley will be held at Morningside United Methodist Church on Sunday, November 19th at 2:00 pm.

 Advent Abend
This year we have another wonderful time planned for our families to engage in our advent season. Come enjoy in our tradition of picture ornaments, decorating ornaments, decorate cookies, and so forth. We will have plenty of crafts to participate in and food!
If you are interested in providing food please contact Yajaira, 971-218-2784. This will be a fundraiser by donation.
This year we also hope to have more community participants and therefore at 12pm will have time for story & song of the advent season, followed by a sharing in meal.

Open Door Church's Charge Conference:

Morningside UMC All Church Conference:
January 7 at 11:15 at Morningside
The Open Door Church's Charge Conference will be a time to gather with fellow UM's from all of our churches to sing together, get to know each other, and hear updates and highlights of the following ministries: Hispanic Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, Youth Ministry, Discipleship Groups and Communications. We will hear a word from our District Superintendent, Rev. Tim Overton-Harris. There will also be a recommendation presented for clergy compensation to be voted on by the Open Door Church's Charge Conference members.
We will gather on Sunday, November 12 at 1:00 at FUMC in the dining room.
All are invited!
Morningside will have an All Church Conference to hear updates and highlights of our ministries. We will receive the Lay Leadership, Trustee and Membership Report. This will be following our morning worship service where our District Superintendent, Rev. Tim Overton-Harris will be our preacher. Rev. Tim will join us for our meeting following the service on January 7, 2018. Everyone is encouraged to attend!

Open Door Churches News
** Get Ready to be Invitational!
We all want our churches to grow and take in new members. One tool for growth is to start new ministries, something we are doing with our Hispanic Ministry, Las Naciones. Another proven tool is for current members to invite their friends, neighbors and extended family. I know that is challenging in our current culture. Yet, I do believe there are people in our community looking for a positive, spiritual community where they are valued, given opportunities to serve and challenged to grow.
The Open Door Churches worship in each congregational service on November 19 will embrace the theme "Gratitude and Giving" with a food drive to support all of our area food banks. It will be great, non-threatening service to invite someone to attend. You will be given a small flyer/invitation the next two Sunday's to give to someone to invite them.
We will also use Facebook to help promote this Sunday.
Let's embrace this opportunity to Be Invitational!!
** Charge Conference, Clergy Compensation and Liaisons
When we gather for the Open Door Churches Charge Conference at 1:00 pm on November 12 at FUMC, the recommendation for clergy compensation is for no increase for 2018. Our time together will include a hymn sing, conversation to build relationship around tables, updates about our current ministries and a word from our District Superintendent, Rev. Tim Overton-Harris.
Each Open Door Churches Clergy was also given a liaison from the board membership as a person of support to meet with throughout the year.
