This Month's Issue: Excelling Entrepreneurship |
Transforming an idea into a successful business is a daunting challenge, especially for those who are doing so for the first time. There are many local resources and organizations that exist to help new business owners take their first steps, build a solid foundation, and grow - here are some of those resources that can provide support and guidance when starting a business:
The Northern Alberta Business Incubator (NABI)
The Northern Alberta Business Incubator is a St. Albert based organization that offers entrepreneurs and small businesses offices spaces, marketing resources, coaching, networking opportunities and meet-up events. They have 3 locations in St. Albert: 13 Mission Avenue and 200 Carnegie Drive serve as their main incubation spaces, while the NABI Commons, located at 205 Carnegie Drive, serves as a "co-working" space for entrepreneurs where they can mingle with other entrepreneurs in an open-space concept and attend daily workshops with business coaches.

Business Awards of Distinction Celebrate St. Albert's Small Business Success
The annual Small Business Awards of Distinction were held at the Arden Theatre on Thursday October 19th, celebrating the incredible diversity and strength of the St. Albert business community. This year, a record 72 nominees were recognized for their achievement and success. Two new awards were added to the stable this year: the Community Stewardship award, presented to an outstanding not-for-profit organization in the community; and the Lynda Moffat Woman of Distinction award, presented to an inspiring business woman within the community.
The evening, hosted by St. Albert's very own Jackie Rae Greening, also featured standout performances by local singer Lia Cole and DanceCo's Ukrainian Dance crew. Though all the businesses were deserving of recognition, the panel of judges was forced to make an ultimate decision in each category. The results from the evening were as follows:

Business Spotlight on... Stick Fix - St. Albert Hockey World
Your kid is having a blast firing pucks at practice with that new high-quality hockey stick you got them for Christmas, but to your horror, the stick snaps after a slap-shot that was bit too enthusiastic - and only a few days before the upcoming tournament. Luckily for you, Ron Young's new business,
Stick Fix - St. Albert Hockey World, has your back: "some people don't know that carbon fibre sticks can be fixed - you don't have to throw them out," says Ron.
Located at 1 Hebert Rd, right near the intersection of St. Albert Trail, Ron has scoped out the perfect location for the new business; "this location is right on the trail, there was really nothing down on this end in St. Albert for skate sharpening and stick repair. We're close to the arenas, close to the hotel, there's tournaments and it's a high traffic area."
Aside from skate sharpening and hockey stick repairs, Ron's business offers some services you might not expect; "anything small and made of carbon fibre, we can repair- sticks, wakeboards, surfboards, kayak paddles. We also do skate repair, equipment cleaning, and have all your skate accessories - laces, skate guards, tapes, hockey socks, apparel, team jerseys, practice jerseys."
Bringing all these services to St. Albert was the idea that Ron wanted to bring to reality; "the original idea was to open a sports store, I just figured St. Albert could use more options as far as sports go, and the stick repair part came from trying to find something that would be different than what we have in St. Albert right now." When asked what the best part of the business is, Ron says that seeing the reaction of a kid getting their prized stick back always stands out: "Whenever I repair a kid's stick, seeing how happy they are to get their stick back stands out. Some have sentimental value to them, and it's good to see them happy that they can keep their stick."
