St. Paul's Church

December 21, 2016

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.    An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.    But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people." (Luke 2:8-10)

Dear St. Paul's,

I hope you are relishing the Advent Season, as you prepare for the coming of Jesus.  Being that it is the Feast of St. Thomas today, I hope that all of your Christmas shopping (and wrapping) is done so you can enjoy some peaceful moments before the big day.

The story of the Nativity of Our Lord takes my breath away.  So beautiful and simple.  I'm thinking especially of the shepherds "keeping watch over their flocks by night."  Shepherds were not highly regarded in First Century Israel.  Somehow, from the time of their revered shepherd ancestor Abraham, to their shepherd king David, to the time of the Roman occupation, shepherding as an occupation fell into disfavor.  Caring for sheep was seen as low class.  And yet the Good News of the birth of the Messiah was first announced to whom?  Shepherds!  God loves all people from every walk of life.

Today we have a special place in our hearts for shepherds.  What would a Christmas pageant be without them?  When you love Jesus, he gives us his love for those who are ignored by the rest of society.  And just like good shepherds, we love our animals.  This Christmas, the Robbins family is giving extra tender loving care to Coco, our rat terrier Chihuahua mix.  She is now 16 years and in declining health.  She has brought us so much joy, and every day we have with her is precious.

So this Christmas, remember the shepherds.  Give special attention to those whom the rest of the world may regard as "low class."  Offer tender loving care to those in need.  Share the joy of the Savior.

Merry Christmas!

Gratefully in Christ,

Pr. Jon

Campaign Update

As of December 21, we have received Building Fund pledges totaling $629,000, representing 25 family units, toward our goal of $1,350,000.  Thank you so much to everyone who has given so generously thus far.

Fortunately, the Internal Revenue Code provides some real tax breaks for charitable giving, in addition to donation deductibility for those who itemize.

For example, donations to St. Paul's Church property, such as stocks, bonds, real estate and the like, held for more than one year, which has appreciated in value over the years, may escape both capital gains and estate taxes.

For more info, please contact the church office or Dean  Sparks 772.234.2398.

UPDATE FROM CROSSROADS CHURCH

Dear Friends,
Dave Petty leading worship

After a recent Crossroads 5 PM service, a 3rd year student at UVA (named John) said:
"Crossroads feels more like a real church  ."      John is right. Crossroads does feel more like a real church! We can all tell the difference.   We moved our evening "living room" gatherings into the sanctuary that our neighborhood M ennonite church has so graciously provided. As the winter nights get longer and colder, the warm  and well-lit space, invites us all in. It's a welcoming place to meet.

If you're like me, you've received many end-of-the-year requests for financial support. Well, as I'm  sure you've guessed, this is no exception. Our Anglican fellowship is too small to financially  sustain itself. To repeat myself, "growing a church takes time." We have a vision for this area that is  filled with a sense of mission. Will you please join with us to support this work with prayer and  financial support? There is nothing like Crossroads in this City of Charlottesville. We are accessible, biblical and  Anglican with hearts full of anticipation for what Jesus can do!

In this season of Advent, let our hearts be full of anticipation for Jesus' arrival and what He has done and will do when He gets here!
"O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!"

Gratefully His, Gratefully yours,
Rev. Dave Petty
