wetlands ecology & coastal resilience

November 2017

CES has had a busy summer and fall. Earlier this summer we hosted the UNESCO-IHE students from Delft, the Netherlands. Also, after weeks of thoroughly reviewing proposals, we selected our 2017 Janke Fund Awardees.   In addition to these programs, I have been actively partnering with numerous organizations to educate the public about coastal resilience, such as the Tower Forum's month breakfast  in early October  and the upcoming Riptide Music Festival this December.

EDUCATION
UNESCO-IHE Water Professionals Program
This spring, CES was proud to host the 12th annual UNESCO-IHE Water Professionals Program. Twenty-two graduate students from developing nations came to South Florida for a highly specialized program in solving water challenges. CES coordinated and led the two-week residency program that combined a mix of technical lectures and informative field trips throughout South Florida. Based at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, The Netherlands, the students are a part of the Institute's Hydroinformatics for Water & Environmental Management program. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Not in my backyard? Guess again!
Recently, the FAU Harbor Branch Pillar held is inaugural Science to Solutions lecture series featuring Dr. Austin Becker, a faculty member of the Department of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Becker's lecture focused on storm resilience, climate adaptation and the tools that policy makers, the public, and other stakeholders need in order to effectively weigh the costs and benefits of resilience investments that will be necessary in the coming decades. In addition to this lecture, held at the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, the following day Dr. Becker participated on a panel for the Tower Forum's monthly breakfast. The session, entitled  Not in my backyard? Guess again!, was  coordinated by CES' Dr. Colin Polsky and  prompted a lively discussion among attendees about the steps necessary to sustainably transform our communities. Following the breakfast, Dr. Becker and Dr. Polsky met with key faculty from the FAU Broward Campus in Ft. Lauderdale.
