Making an image backup with Windows 10

You can never have too many backups.  Well maybe you can, but we never see that as a problem.  If you make a backup of your backup, we salute you.  If you don't even have one backup of your data, then we are here to help you.

A backup of your data is essential for so many reasons - reasons almost too numerous to mention.  But if you get hit with a virus, malware, bad hardware or memory failure, your backup will save your sanity.
Windows 10 (and 8.1) makes it easier than ever to make an image backup

1- Right-click the Start button and launch Control Panel.

2- Click File History.

3- While in File History, click the System Image Backup link in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

4- Connect an external USB hard drive with enough free space.

5- In the backup wizard, you'll be prompted to choose from one of the three options to save the backup. For this example, we are going select the hard drive you just connected. However, keep in mind that you can backup to DVD blanks and a network share, but these options will slow down the backup process.

6- Click Next.

7- Confirm and begin the process by clicking Start backup.

The backup could take anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the amount of data.  Happily, you can use your computer during the backup.

This is a great utility for your work or home computer.

After the System Image Backup utility completes the task, remove the USB drive and keep in a safe place. You can use two USB drives and rotate them for an even stronger backup plan.

Business Email Compromise Scam
We have seen a dramatic increase in an email scam trying to fool the victim into wire transferring funds.  The email appears to come from the company CEO and often targets individuals in the company that have financial authority.
How do these criminals create such a realistic scam?  They go to great lengths to research the company, construct the email and correspond with the victim.  Sometimes, they infiltrate the company  using malware.

How to protect yourself:

  1. Contact your bank and add additional layers of security to wire transfer authorization
  2. Inform all your employees that have financial authority not to wire transfer without verbal confirmation
  3. Keep your anti-virus and anti-malware up-to-date
  4. Be careful of what you post socially on sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
  5. Have a good, current backup of all your critical data
  6. When in doubt, don't complete any transactions
  7. Review and tighten your security policies as needed. You can add two-factor authentication, enforce more stringent authentication and password policy rules and add regular user training

If you think you may have received a fraudulent request, feel fee to reach out to us for help.

If you are the victim of this or any other scam, contact the authorities immediately.
