Their lifetimes separated by a century, Sir John Soane and Mies van der Rohe, might at first seem diametric opposites: the one known for his residence filled with things collected, the complexity of effects and illusions in his House Museum, the other associated with "less is more" and a vocabulary used repeatedly on project after project. Yet precisely in the search for a vocabulary that could synthesize tradition and create something fundamentally modern and novel the two might be seen as masters of abstraction, students of the languages of architecture to create a new grammar for their present.
