Local Employers Creating a Culture of Health
ConocoPhillips
Shape Up Houston in partnership with the Clinton Foundation hosted a conference on Best Practices in Employee Health on December 10, 2014. This half-day conference tailored to employers concerned about the health of their employees and its impact on profitability, featured sessions that demonstrated successful strategies to improve employee health and reverse the cost trend.

Presenters included representatives from MD Anderson, ConocoPhillips, General Electric, Blinds.com, and others who shared success stories on:

  • Building a Culture of Health
  • Tobacco-Free Policy Implementation
  • Worksite Wellness Program Legal Implications
  • Optimizing Engagement, Participation, and Outcomes of Wellness Programming
During the Culture of Health session we learned that a large number of ConocoPhillips employees participate in the Good for You! campaign, a multi-year campaign designed to help employees maintain or improve overall health and wellness. ConocoPhillips has also invested in a Wellness Services Facility at their Houston campus offering staff the amenities with which to become and remain healthy. "The investments that ConocoPhillips has made in wellness facilities and services and the company's efforts to engage its employees in support of healthier lifestyles are part of what makes this a great place to work.  It's good for employees and our families, it's good for our business, and it's how we do things here." added Bruce Wilcoxon,  Director of Corporate Public Policy with ConocoPhillips and former Co-Chair of Healthy Living Matters.

The ConocoPhillips Wellness Services Facility in Houston opened in 2007. This facility offers 90,000 square feet of space, which includes an aquatic center, a strength and cardio floor, group fitness rooms and indoor/outdoor sports fields.
Recommendations Regarding Obesity Prevention and ControlObesityRecs

The Community Preventive Services Task Force, an independent, non-federal, unpaid panel of public health and prevention experts recently posted new information on its website on  Behavioral Interventions that Aim to Reduce Recreational Sedentary Screen Time Among Children.

The task force recommends behavioral interventions to reduce recreational sedentary screen time among children aged 13 years and younger. This finding is based on strong evidence of effectiveness in reducing recreational sedentary screen time, increasing physical activity, improving diet, and improving or maintaining weight-related outcomes.
