November, 2017                                                         Vol. 10, Issue 10
Dear ,

October was a month full of Scouting activities from Tiger Cubs to trainings. November too will see Scouts in action as we lend our collective support to help those in need through Scouting for Food.

October also brought us tears with so many friends and families impacted by fires to the north and of course the tragic accidental death of one of our beloved staff members. These are times that try us and also times that can bring us together.
Together, we will share these memories of loss and find solace in the friendships we have with one another throughout our council.

And together, we will move forward and build a legacy from these times that will guide us along all the trails we might take in Scouting in Marin.

Bill Bradbury Family Fund

We are saddened by the tragic loss of Bill Bradbury--our Tamarancho camp ranger and our friend. He passed away doing something he loved for a camp and program he loved. His loss leaves us all with a hole in our hearts as we grieve alongside his wife and two children.

Since many of our Marin Council families have asked how they can help Bill's family, we have created a Bill Bradbury Family Fund at the Marin Council, through which we can accept donations that will directly benefit his family.

If you would like to make a donation, please click this link to download a donation form.

Thank you for your consideration and help.

Deadline Approaching

Just a reminder that rechartering paperwork is due on November 15--completed and signed. This is so we can process it and work with any issues that may arise.

Please let us know if you have questions or are having difficulties.

Email with any questions.
It's Roundtable Time

Thursday, November 2, Is Roundtable

Unit leaders don't forget to send someone from your unit to the November roundtable meeting. It's a great time to meet other leaders, share best practices, and ask questions.

Roundtables are at 7:30, the first Thursday of every month from September through June, at the LDS Church, 220 N. San Pedro Road, San Rafael.

Cub Scout Roundtable

Fun and fellowship begin at 7:30 p.m., winding down at 8:30 p.m. This month an experienced guest Scouter will lead our discussion on advancement and recognition, and we'll also cover how to plan a smooth Webelos transition. Council commissioners will give a brief explanation and then help packs complete Journey to Excellence evaluations on the spot to help strengthen your pack program. This should be a fun, informative, and productive roundtable.

See you there!

Special Guest

There will be someone from the SF-Marin Food Bank in both roundtables to update us on the vast need in Marin as we get ready for Scouting for Food.

Commissioners at Roundtable

Journey to Excellence (JTE) is a special program designed by BSA National to help individual units maximize their service and program to their Scouts. To help with the JTE forms this year, your local commissioners will be at this Thursday's roundtable to provide assistance in understanding these goals.

If you come to roundtable, we will have last year's form on hand for your unit (in most cases) for comparison, and commissioners will be at the meeting to help you complete the 2017 forms.

November 4 and 11

We are sure that everyone is getting organized for this great service project.

Remember, there was a mistake on the door hangers that state we are picking up food on the 4th and the 11th. However, as you know, we are only picking up on the 11th. Please do not put out door hangers before Saturday so that people do not expect us to pick up this Saturday.

The need in Marin is very large. Many people do not realize how may people are food insecure here in our county. This helpful fact sheet with show some of that. You will also hear from someone from the Food Bank at this coming roundtable. We hope we can collect substantial amounts of food to assist in meeting these needs.

Since 1988, the Marin Council has gathered well over a million pounds of food for the Marin Food Bank. Last year alone, we contributed over 27,000 lbs of food when all the totals were in, during one of the rainiest days of winter! What an awesome way to teach our families how to give and to serve their community. It is a very tangible way to see giving in action and leaves everyone feeling like they have contributed significantly.

Email Tim with any questions.
Of the Year Awards

It's November, and it's time to think about nominating Scouts and adults for recognition. Every year, the Marin Council conducts the Of the Year program to recognize outstanding youth and adults in every level of Scouting.

Deadline for nomination submission is January 5, 2018. So, start thinking about them now. Don't miss this opportunity.

Look for forms to be posted on our council web site in the next week.
Order of the Arrow News

Talako held the Fall Ordeal the weekend of October 20-22nd at Camp Tamarancho. We would like to welcome our newest Arrowmen: Luca Caviness, Grisha Driscoll, Xander Ertmann, Matthew Harrington, Gavin Hinz, George Knightly, Henry Lawerence, Jamey Schnasse, Thomas Urey, and Heston Wilson. Our service project was improving the trail from the center camp gate up the hill toward the Ghilotti campsite.

Our next service project will be receiving the food during Scouting for Food at the SF-Marin Food Bank on November 11. We look forward to your donations!

We would also like to add our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family of Ranger Bill Bradbury. We spent another wonderful weekend with him during our Ordeal, and we will forever remember his passion for Camp Tamarancho, his wonderful family, and all things Scouting. He gave so much to our council. We will miss him.

Peace be with you Brother.
Iron Springs Road

Following the tragic accident on Iron Springs Road last week, media reports erroneously reported that there was a road collapse. We felt it important to correct that statement with our Scouting families and let you know that Iron Springs Road is completely passable in terms of access to Tamarancho. In fact, it is important to note that due the dedication of Camp Ranger Bill Bradbury, Iron Springs Road is perhaps in the best shape it has been in years. The gravel work and scraping we have been conducting during the last months have resulted in a very smooth fire road.

Regardless, Iron Springs Road, like many roads throughout Marin, is a narrow road, and all drivers should exercise caution when traveling to or from camp. We remind all Iron Spring Road users to always watch their speed on the road and not to exceed 10 mph; yield to cars that are traveling uphill; and when encountering oncoming traffic on Iron Springs Road, pull as closely to the uphill side of the road as opposed to downhill shoulder.
Marin Council Shooting Sports

Shooting Events in October

In October we had 2 shooting programs for Cub Scouts at Tamarancho. On October 7, Tiger Cubs had a day of shooting BB rifles and archery. On October 28, our annual Halloween/Turkey shoot had 96 costumed Cub Scouts shoot BB rifles and archery.

Upcoming Shooting Events

Larkspur Troop 59 will be shooting .22 rifles, archery, and throwing tomahawks on November 4.

The next Cub Scout shooting event is the Pinewood Derby Workshop shoot on 2/10/18. During the hours of the Pinewood Derby Workshop run by the Order of the Arrow, the Shooting Sports Committee opens the range for drop-in BB Gun shooting.

Upcoming Training Opportunities

These shooting events are put on exclusively by volunteer adults. Without them, these opportunities would not happen. If your child enjoys the shooting experience, please consider signing up to help. In order for us to teach gun safety and provide an enjoyable shooting experience, we need adults to be trained and help staff these ranges.

Please consider one of the training certification classes listed in the attached document. Click here for the class dates and description! Registration for these classes will be live on our web site soon.

Our 2017 annual Friends of Scouting giving campaign is well on its way, but participation is down in a year when camp repairs have been numerous, event attendance and equipment use has been high (yeah), and membership and recruiting has been great. None of your yearly dues are diverted to support council programs, increased participation and camp use, or maintenance and repairs of our camps. That's what the Friends of Scouting campaign is for.

Each Scout's experience in the Marin Council program is supplemented by about $250 per year. Not every family is able to give that amount, and some are able to give more. The goal is for everyone to give what they can.

Please note that donations are no longer collected through your unit but through direct donations from brochures sent to Scout home addresses. Alternatively, one can give by clicking this link and picking "Give to Local Scouting--Marin."

Thank you for donating any amount to our campaign! We couldn't have such a wonderful program and facilities if it weren't for you.
