Dear Neighbour:
My new puppy Rogue with Santa at Totoredaca Park

It has been a busy year in Ward 9 with the opening of both Union Park and the Meadowvale Community Centre and Library.  Both are well used and welcome additions to our ward 9 recreational facilities.

On November 12 this year I celebrated the 25th anniversary of the day I was first elected as your Councillor.  I am so appreciative of the support from the residents of Ward 9 for all these years.  I love our community and my prime goal is to make it the best it can be.  Thank you to all who joined me at my Open House on December 7.  It was nice seeing so many old and some new faces.

We also received the decision on the mediation of the application for 2700 Aquitaine.   There is further information in this newsletter and links to the plan.

As we head into 2017, I want to give a special thank you to those who volunteer your time to helping others. You make our city and our community great!

On behalf of my family and staff, I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Year.  To those who recognize other religious days, may your time of celebration be joyous.

In the event that you are unable to view this
e-newsletter please note that there is always a link on the front page of my website  www.ward9.ca.

As always, my staff and I are here to help you with any City or Regional issues.  Just send me an email to  pat.saito@mississauga.ca or call  905-896-5900 and check the Ward 9 website at  www.ward9.ca for ongoing updates.

Development Update:  2700 Aquitaine Ave Application

On December 14, Council was presented with the outcome of the mediated settlement for the application at 2700 Aquitaine.

This was directed by the Ontario Municipal Board and was, at the OMB direction, held in closed session.  Complete confidentiality was required and as your Councillor I could not be involved.

Council was presented with a lot of information as well as the settlement and forced with having to make a decision, voted to accept it.  I did not support the decision as I objected to the process being mandated to not include the public.

Given the information in the report, I feel that Council had little choice but to approve the settlement.  The decision had already been taken from us and, while I am not happy with the outcome, I think it could be much worse.

The final decision allows construction of 3 apartment buildings  of 12, 9 and 7 storeys comprised of 393 new units.  With removal of 112 of the garden home units, the final number will be 616 units.   In all of the proposals and the final approved plan, the towers are joined by 4 or 5 storey podium buildings.   Please click here to read a full explanation.

The site plan and this information is also on the Ward 9 website at ward9.ca.
Winter Snow Clearing Info

The City of Mississauga is ready for winter. Our winter crew is ready with 377 pieces of equipment to clear 5,600 lane km of roads; 1,400 lane km of priority sidewalks; 3,700 bus stops and over 1,000 pedestrian crossings.
  • Roads are salted if snowfall is less than eight cm (three inches) or plowed and salted if snowfall is more than eight cm (three inches).
  • Major roads are cleared first for emergency and transit vehicles to travel. This is followed by local residential roads, bus stops, pedestrian crossings and priority sidewalks (around hospitals, schools and major transit routes for transit service).
  • Priority sidewalks, bus stops and pedestrian crossings are cleared within 24-36 hours after the end of snowfall.
Follow @MississaugaSnow on Twitter for current conditions and progress.

My Initiative to Make our Roads Safer

Many years ago I was part of a team to establish a  Road Safety Committee in Mississauga and I served on the committee until it was disbanded by Council in 2104..

Consisting of citizens, staff and Councillors, we initiated and implemented several good safety campaign.

I raised concerns at that time that we needed this committee to represent citizens and to find ways to work with staff and citizens to make our roads safer.  We have seen more pedestrians and cyclists involved in fatal collisions than ever before and I do no think that we are doing all we can to make our roads safer for all.

At the December 14th Council meeting, I asked for a report to come to General Committee  to update Council on what we staff has done and also to reinstate the committee.

I received Council support and the report from staff will come forward on January 25, 2017.

I hope that this committee can review what other cities have done and are doing.  One approach is Vision Zero.  This program has many of the initiatives our committee recommended and implemented years ago but we have not done enough.  I am confident that I will get Council support to re-form the committee and I intend to serve on it again.  There is more we can do and we need to work together to make sure everyone is safe on our roads.
Waste Collection Information over Christmas and New Years

There are some changes to collection schedules over the holidays so please note:

Curbside collection: All recycling, garbage and organics collection will be one day later for the weeks of December 26, 2016 and January 2, 2017.

Holiday waste exemption: There is a waste exemption period on your regularly scheduled garbage collection day during the weeks of December 27-30, 2016 and January 3-6, 2017.

During this period, if you receive curbside collection, you can place unlimited amounts of acceptable excess garbage at the curb without garbage bag tags. Bags must weigh no more than 20 kgs. (44 lbs.) each. You are asked to ensure that there is one metre of space between your excess bags of garbage and your garbage and organics carts.

Christmas trees: Real Christmas trees will be collected if you place them at the curb on your regularly scheduled recycling collection day during the weeks of January 9 and 16, 2017. You can also take trees to a Community Recycling Centre (CRC) if you miss your collection.
Trees taller than 3 m. (10 ft.) must be cut in half to be collected at the curb or dropped off at a CRC. There will be no drop-off fees at the CRC during the Christmas tree collection period.

You need to remove all outer plastic bags, ornaments, tinsel, nails, wire and tree stands from your trees for them to be collected. Trees placed in or on snowbanks will not be collected. If you live in an apartment or condo, you can put your trees at the curb by the driveway entrance to the property, but you are asked to ensure that these do not obstruct the road or sidewalk.

I chaired the regular meeting of the Mississauga Tourism Advisory Board on November 17th to discuss how we can increase and improve tourism in our city.

The commitment is so strong with this board and the payback is immense. For example, the economic  impact of the 2016 Ontario Summer Games was over $6 million!

Other events that we have attracted also bring in millions of dollars to our hotels, shops and restaurants - all good for the economy. We are working on a new destination master plan and I am confident we can attract even larger events to benefit the city.

Please watch for the new revised and greatly improved Tourism Visitor Guide we will be launching in January. In the meantime please visit
