Last 8th Dec 2016 the EU
Council adopted a new directive to reduce air pollution. The new rules set stricter national limits for the emission of some of the most dangerous air pollutants (more info in the article below).
We must definitely welcome these kinds of decisions that are designed to protect our health and the environment.
The other day I saw an electric car of one of the car sharing companies available in London, parked and in charge. Then, while walking to get the tube, I saw the same daily picture: hundreds of cars and buses stuck in queue for minutes and minutes.
There are so many debates about how much the environment would be better if all vehicles on the road were fully electric or hydrogen-powered, which is true, but only in principle.
What about road congestion and time wasted in queues
? Assuming that overnight all existing cars were replaced with electric ones, the following day there would be the same number of vehicles in the street, the same length of queues and the same amount of wasted time.
This must suggest some analyses: Intelligent Transport Systems,
now very much developed, were adopted in the 1980s to improve the existing capacity of road infrastructures. The results have been very rewarding.
The evolution in new vehicles engines (more performing) and better fuels quality (less polluting) helped make things better, but not enough. That's why the entire world is now being looking to full electric vehicles (FEVs), but it is not considered we still have problems about reducing road congestion.
The policies designed to ban cars from city centres by charging levies to enter them did not obtain the projected beneficial effects regarding either the drastic reduction of the number of cars in the streets or amount of revenues city councils planned to cash in.
It is clear that electric cars would not solve some problems. There are many technical conferences showing that by 2030 the majority of circulating cars will be electric, but something disruptive should be thought about reducing the number of vehicles. And
it would not be technical.
