Family Science Nights

OregonASK is excited to announce a new partnership with the Portland Council PTA! Working together, we are bringing training to PTA leaders so that they can hold family engineering nights at their schools. Six pilot schools are a part of the project, with hopes to expand next school year to include additional schools. This year, Boise-Eliot, Creston, Faubion, Hayhurst, Scott and Vestal were selected to participate. We look forward to sharing this opportunity with additional PTAs next school year.

Portland Council PTA held a city wide meeting on October 20, 2016 to share how STEM education can inspire student learning and how PTAs can play a role in engaging families to create positive STEM identities for all students. It was a great evening with hands on activities and information on how everyone can play a substantial role in supporting STEM in their schools.

ESSA & Afterschool STEM Integration

OregonASK is excited to be working with the Oregon Department of Education, Chief Education Office and an amazing group of stakeholders as help  policymakers and STEM partners thoroughly understand the importance and role that afterschool and summer STEM opportunities play for creating equitable systems to support all youth in Oregon.

Over the last several weeks, we have been working to understand how we might be able to utilize the new ESSA authorization to better integrate informal STEM & CTE opportunities within our state education plan moving forward. We will be discussing our strategies and recommendations at our next open work group meeting, December 14th in Salem. If you are interested and able to join us to provide feedback, please RSVP to let us know how many to expect.

If you are interested in hearing more about the state ESSA plan, you can also CLICK HERE to see the schedule of Department of Education Community Forums to share the draft plan.
