About

Fox River Trail Runners annual Spring Half Marathon Training for area runners.  Participants will be coached by RRCA Certified Running Coaches, schooled with the latest classroom training who actively coach athletes year round. 

Studies show training with a group is a great way accomplish your goals, get through challenging runs from a mental and physical standpoint. You will have FUN and make some new friends. 

Our training program schedules can be adjusted for any spring half marathon. Start dates for the main races are:

  • Great Western Half Marathon (May 7) 
    • Training starts Monday, Feb 13
    • First Group Run Sunday, Feb 19                   
  • Sly Fox/Illinois Half/Naperville Womens Half/Spring chance PR Half
    • Training starts Monday, Jan 30
    • First LONG Run Sunday, Feb 5 
    Please note that the first official Endurance program run will be on Feb 19, but you are welcome to join our normal FRTR Sunday runs from Feb 5.

Note that you do NOT need to wait for your events training to start running. Join us anytime!

Sunday Long runs

Training Plans

We are offerring three different type of plans based on your experience. You can select the plan you want during registration and can change it at any time.

  1. "Beginner" plan:  Typically for people that are new to the distance, have not done the distance in some time or are looking for the time commitment from slightly lower mileage.  This HALF marathon plan starts at 11 miles per week (mpw) and a long run of 3 miles and will peak at ~21 mpw and a long run of 10 miles.  This plan will have 4 days a week of running
  2. "Intermediate" Plan: Typically for people that have run the distane before OR are already acclimated to a bit higher mileage.  This HALF marathon plan starts at 15 mpw with a long run of 5 miles and peaks at ~26 mpw and a long run of 12 miles. This plan will have 4 days a week of running
  3. "Advanced" Plans:  Typically for people that are more seaonsed at the distance.  In additon to higher mileage there is a bit more intensity in the end weeks of training.  This HALF marathon plans start at 24 mpw and a long run of 8 and peaks at ~40 mpw and a long run of 15 miles.  This plan will have FIVE days a week of running

Suggested Requirements

In order to enhance your opportunity for success, we strongly encourage you to have an adequate training base in place before entering the program. We recommend the following:

  • Running at any pace two to three days a week (see starting mileage above)
  • You have completed one run of 4 miles or more within the previous month

Coach Led and Non-Coach Leed Options

Our coaches are available to help you achieve your goals.  If you are running our Great Western Half and you sign up for training you will automatically be assigned a coach to use at your discretion.  If you are running another event, you can choose a coach ing plan when you register for training.  Our coaches will:

  • Help with any minor modifications to your training plan due to vacations, injuries, etc.
  • Be available via email for any questions,
  • Review comments you make on actual workouts and respond as needed.

Of course our coaches are available to all participants during group runs for questions.

I attest and do hereby verify that I am physically fit and have trained sufficiently for this event, and that I am aware of the risk of physical injury. I intend by this release to assume full responsibility to anything that may happen to me. I further agree to indemnify and hold harmless and defend the aforementioned organizations and their officers, agents, servants and employees from any and all claims resulting from injuries, including death, damages, and loss sustained by me and arising out of, connected with, or in any way associated with the activities of the FRTR Fall Marathon Training Program.
